Great resource

This is a very nice, concise treatise looking back at the history of God's dealings with his people Israel and Judah, and all of the times of covenant breaking, idolatry, harlotry, etc. that they had performed time and time again, and how God promised over and over again how they would be brought under judgment for it. To me this is great to have, a single shorter work detailing all of the issues of the people over the centuries in one place.

Taking this detailed history, and comparing it to the words spoken to that harlot "Babylon" in Revelation, their is only one viable conclusion you can make; Revelation's mystery Babylon, the mother of harlots, drunk with the blood of the martyr's, is Israel, and specifically those in Jerusalem at the time of the prophecy being spoken.

In the end, this book shows how Revelation is speaking directly about the divine judgment that came upon those old covenant people in AD 70. Good stuff.

Great book! Short but to the point.

I enjoyed this book. In light of the overwhelming information on this subject I have to agree with the author as to who the harlot in the book of Revelation is. To many valid points and to much scriptural evidence to deny it was apostate Israel.

The best book around on the subject

I have tended to be frustrated with the books available on fMRI, which have all been in the format of edited chapters by an wide array of authors. While that format would seem to have the advantage that the leading experts on a particular area are presenting the material they know best, in effect it causes a disjointed text that is hard to follow.
In contrast, this book was written entirely by a single author who has a style that is clear and easy to follow. I wouldn't say that Buxton's writing is conversational, but he does a good job of making the wide range of topics (both physical and physiological) accessible without using over-simplifications or backing off from the current controversies in the field. Another strength of the book is that he gives considerable treatment to alternative methods (such as perfusion, diffusion and tracer methods) which have been slighted in other texts to include yet another chapter on 3T vs 4T.

Solid explanations of some important concepts

(Disclaimer: I know and like Rick, but I'm trying to be objective regardless!)

So I've owned this book since it was first out. I didn't look at the first edition that much, but I've found that in the past year or so the second edition has become progressively more useful to me. (I think it's just the timing, it's nothing to do with the 2nd edition per se.) It is an introductory text, but not perhaps in the way most people would expect: as a laundry list of terms and their explanations that can be used like a dictionary. Instead, this is a book that needs to be read. And that's why I think I've found it more useful of late. If I am looking for a solid description of a particular phenomenon and it's covered in the book then it's usually an elegant explanation. Indeed, my biggest complaint is that there aren't more sections on more topics!

I don't think there is a single introductory text that fully covers fMRI, whether it's for the acquisition, the data processing, the experimental design or what have you. But this text is definitely a very useful member of a small set of useful introductions, most prominent amongst which I would put the intro text by Huettel, Song and McCarthy. HSM is a radically different approach to fMRI than Buxton; I wouldn't be without the pair of them.

In sum, it's thorough, very well written, readable for someone with a modicum of background knowledge. If you're transitioning from another area of NMR or MRI, or you've just taken an intro MRI/fMRI course (and you understood most of it!) then you should find this text useful.

Help convince your colleagues to collaborate

Smart Collaboration provides something new to professional service firms - evidence that collaboration is the path to higher margin, intellectually challenging, service engagements. This is exactly the information professional services, law firms in particular, need in order to address current market challenges. To date (and I have worked in the legal industry for more than 25 years), there has only been anecdotal evidence that collaboration creates value and is welcomed by clients. Ms. Gardner provides the evidence pointing out the financial benefits of collaboration, the relationship benefits, and the obstacles to collaboration. She also provides solid strategies for addressing those obstacles. Collaboration will always be difficult, but the first step is convincing professionals to forego short term gain for long term value. Ms. Gardner's smart research provides the evidence to begin to sway the skeptics and point out why collaboration is so important.

Ravi Vakil has put together a collection of wonderful topics from number theory through combinatorics to game theory in a fashion that seventh- and eighth-grade students can handle yet high school students will find challenging.His book is divided into two parts. Part 1 introduces to the young reader a number of mathe-matics topics that will be very useful in part 2. For example, in the first section, "Number Theory," such topics as calculating tricks, divisibility rules with proofs of why they work, and magic squares are investigated fully and clearly. In part 2, many of the earlier topics are revisited, but the level of difficulty is increased. In 'Number Theory Revisited,' an in-depth study of rational and irrational numbers, a fascinating painted-school-lockers problem, and other topics challenge students in an entertaining manner.Perhaps the best features of the book, however, are the historical digressions on great mathematicians and short personal profiles of c! ! ontemporaries of the author. These glimpses into the lives of young male and female mathematicians make this book very much worth its price. Reviewed by Andre ToomThere are different books on my shelf. Some are large like dinosaurs: these are textbooks. Others are much smaller, but their educational value may be greater. For example, Kordemsky's book [3] contributed a lot to Russian childrens' interest in mathematics although its English edition fits in a hand. The book I am going to discuss fits in a coat pocket, but it speaks in an interesting and understandable way about number theory, combinatorics, game theory, geometry, and calculus, to say nothing about magic tricks, puzzles and other digressions. What is most important is that whenever Vakil starts to discuss something, he never leaves the reader without a piece of exact, rigorous knowledge. This is a book about mathematics, not about its fuzzy placebo.Ravi Vakil received several olympiad prizes and now is an instructor at Princeton University. This is his first book, and in it he tries to share his expertise with his readers. He tries to encourage! ! curiosity, a sense of beauty, and the love of knowledge. This is a book I would like to have read as a boy. Why? Because it addresses the normal curiosity of children. It contains many good problems, facts, and stories. It is a mixture of just those ingredients which are most useful for children. Vakil enjoys ideas that seem simple if you already know them, but may seem paradoxical if you don't. One of them is presented as a card trick (p. 44): I ask you to shuffle a deck of cards thoroughly. Then I ask for them back (face down). Carefully examining the backs of the cards, I separate them into two piles. I then claim that, through the power of magic, I've made sure that the number of black cards in the first pile is the number of red cards in the second pile!The explanation starts as follows: "While pretending to exmine the backs of the cards, I was simply " Can you complete this explanation? I remember that as a boy I was quite fond of various tricks and had a notebook wh! ! ere I wrote as many of them as I could find. Although Vakil's book is intended to be recreative and facultative, it contains many facts that are indispenable for mathematical literacy, including: Criteria for divisibility. Those for 2, 3 and 7 are proved; other proofs are left for the reader (pp. 23, 29). Let g(x) denote any polynomial in x. Then the remainder when g(x) is divided by x a is g(a). 2 is irrational (p. 121). There are infinitely many primes (p. 124). Heron's formula for the area of a triangle (p. 160) The harmonic series diverges (p. 180).Each of these facts is not only proved, but accompanied with several variations that are presented as problems or comments. Sometimes they lead into quite substantial mathematics. There are many "local" proofs, which also help to develop the readers' "proof sense." I like the following most:The "hypervolume" of a "four-dimensional sphere" of radius r is H = (r^ 2)^2/2. Can you use a method similar to that of Par! ! t 1 and Part 4 to find the "surface volume/" (p. 81). This book contains several "personal profiles" of gifted youngsters with whom Vakil became acquainted at olympiads. Vakil writes several lines about how they found their way into mathematics, for example: "J. In his preface he writes: "Math is a uniquely aesthetic discipline; mathematicians use words like beauty, depth, elegance, and power to describe excellent ideas" (p. 10). When starting to speak about combinatorics, he writes: "More important (to me, at least) is its aesthetic appeal" (p. 45). Before p! ! resenting the proof of irrationality of 2, he writes: "It is also extremely beautiful. its elegance lies in its simplicity" (p. 121). Is Vakil alone in stressing the beauty of mathematics? By far not. He refers to G. H. Hardy who said similar things in his A Mathematician's Apology. (p. 120).Here is the last problem in the book:On a remote Norwegian mountain top, there is a huge checkerboard, 1000 squares wide and 1000 squares long, surrounded by steep cliffs to the north, south, east, and west. Each square is marked with an arrow pointing in one of the eight compass directions, so (with the possible exception of some squares on the edges) each square has an arrow pointing to one of its eight nearest neighbors. The arrows on squares sharing an edge differ by at most 45. A lemming is placed randomly on one of the squares, and it jumps from square to square following the arrows. Prove that the poor creature will eventually plunge from a cliff to its death.Is this a "real! ! -world" problem? Certainly not. There is no such checkerboard in the mountains of Norway. According to some educational theories, students should not be interested in this problem, but they are. In fact this problems was invented by a secondary-school student Kevin Purbhoo. Is Kevin abnormal? If he is, I am also. Bobrov's book [1], which mixes mathematics with fantasy, accompanied all my childhood, and I lilked its fantastic element most! Vakil writes about this problem: "Although Kevin did not know at the time, this problem anticipates several subtle and important results in topology" This is typical of Vakil's book: recreational mathematics leads to deep and important ideas. It deserves many readers.There is a good-old editorial "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus" an answer to a girl named Virginia who asked the editor of the New York Sun in 1897, "Is there a Santa Claus?" It seems to me that some modern educators have lost the pathos of spirituality expressed there! ! , which makes humans human. It is in human nature to be interested in abstractions. The human ability to think without and immediate material gratification is at the base of civilization. In this context, Vakil's book might be called "Yes, Virginia, Math is Beautiful."References1. A rare beauty !

The author himself is renowned in math circles for his various achievements like gold medals at IMO ! and 4 times Putnam fellow ! No wonder this book is such beautiful rarety. I was totally impressed by the handling of the topics and the problem-solving approaches the author has chosen to explain. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in accelerating his knowledge in maths for a competitive exam like ARML, USMO. IMO etc. Definitely not for fire-side reading so it aint worth your time if you have only casual interest in maths. This book is intended for serious kids.I'd given it 10 stars for such marvelous insight.

Insightful, interesting, excellent!

Ravi Vakil gives a delightful introduction of some of the more interesting yet enigmatic areas of mathematics. Most of us are not too familiar with the cardinality of numbers or Galois Theory. However, the author presents these fascinating topics in such a lucid and insightful manner, that one becomes easily engrossed. Also, I particularly enjoyed reading the profiles of the young mathematicians - it was quite inspiring! Furthermore, the problems at the end of each section are thought provoking; many do not have complete solutions, and thus encourage the reader to think hard about them. As the title implies, it is NOT a textbook, but rather a compilation of scattered "lectures." It is a great book for the talented math reader, and students who want to explore some mathematics outside the general curriculum.

Excellent --- for middle school to very early high school

I understand that Ravi Vakil has a great record in the IMO and Putnam competitions. When I read the reviews and the back cover on a web site which explicitly stated: "Reveals some of [Vakil's] most powerful problem solving strategies," -- Well, of course I bought it immediately. Unfortunately most of the things in the book are quite elementary as far as problem solving goes. It is meant as an exposure for people who haven't seen these things so far(particularly talented jr high /middle school and early high school). Of course you will find some very interesting facts in here (and the rare mistakes-- Euler's Formula being called DeMoivre's Theorem) and will leave many young students in awe as Mr. Vakil shows off some beautiful mathematics. It is a good book, but I gave it only 3 stars because I expected much more( much more "powerful" stuff as the backcover said). If your a very experienced problem solver you will find many of the things in this book trivial(you will find some gems though), but if your a beginner with some talent, then you will love this book.

Disappointing Detour

When the first book finished, it looked like there was going to be a voyage to find the home world of the ship, The Wanderer.

The second book starts (spoiler alert) with many reasons why a direct voyage to the Wanderer's home cannot be made. So, while there is plenty of action, this book isn't quite as stand-alone a book as the Escape ... there is less character development of the characters and the ending seems to be simply a spot to stop... to start another adventure again.

I'd have rather had a longer book... with much more accomplished and done... with the ending accomplishing something... like actually getting the slaves and prisoners off the ships ... you know... the details?

While I really enjoyed the first book... I didn't enjoy this one as much. I'm still giving it a generous 4 stars... but it's really more a 3 star book.

And, because this one was so short... I'm now thinking that this story will be drawn out into many more books... just for more money, instead of actually telling the full story in a decent trilogy. I purchased the second book and was severely disappointed.
I did receive the first book at no cost... so splitting the cost over 2 books... isn't bad ... but really... I'm so disappointed and as much as I was enjoying the world and the story, I won't be purchasing any more of the books.

Still good for YA action ... not so good for science fictions fans. While I highly recommend the first book... don't be tricked into spending for this one and expecting the same quality. You'll be disappointed. I was.

somewhat lightweight, but sorta fun

I had a tough time deciding between 3 & 4 stars on this one. I went with 4 because I enjoyed the first one enough to get the 2nd one, & the second has some elements that improve upon the first. I don't recap plots, so will just delineate the good 'n' bad. Overall, I'd call this brain candy --you just park your brain & ride along. It's a fluffy read; pretty much cotton candy for the brain, diverting but not so icky that you get mind cavities. Definitely not Great Literature or any challenge to the works of the Golden Age of SF. But sorta fun.

The good stuff:
The characters are generally engaging; they have their good & bad traits, & some of the less fortunate characteristics are products of being ill-treated, so are more forgivable. They grow & change over the course of the books. A new being is introduced in this book, a likeable alien. Also, other characters are introduced & the book is less claustrophobic than the first as the POV changes to some of these other characters, in situations on planets or other ships --it's not all just Jess & Co on the Wanderer, all the time.

The ship is interesting & just chock-full of nifty-spifty stuff. I thought it was interesting the way the ship 'melds' with Jess. (tho awfully darned handy at times...see below).

The depiction of slavery is realistically grim (tho whether it'd be economically feasible in an interstellar civilization, I have no idea). Makes the ex-slave characters more sympathetic....most of 'em.

The bad stuff:

The characters (& writing in general) seemed a bit too simplistic at times, as if the book was written for a YA audience. I assume it's not, given the amount of enthusiastic leaping into beds (& elsewhere) for sexual exploration that goes on between the two young'uns. It's not graphic sex, but i have a hard time seeing parents being overly keen on their teenagers reading about other teenagers dashing off to roil the sheets every time they get a free minute. So if it is a YA, the sexual elements are off; if it's not, other elements are off.

The ship is TOO nifty-spifty; whatever problem arises, the ship can fix. If it doesn't have a way to deal with a problem, it can grow/change/make all new weapons or abilities to deal with it. Many times it felt like a cheap plot cheat: a deus ex shipina instead of deus ex machina. It reminds me of one reason I hate magic/sorcery-type fantasy; if a big threat looms, just wave the magic wand. Here, Jess just waves the magic ship.

After having my blood pressure red-line regularly by horribly edited Kindle books full of grammatical & punctuation errors, it's nice to see this one doesn't have too many howlers. However, the author appears to've taken an interesting approach to those thorny questions of when to use that pesky possessive apostrophe and the its/it's dilemma, and whether to use a colon or semi-colon: he just avoids them altogether. There's almost a complete lack of any of the aforementioned punctuation marks. So there are still errors, but at least he's consistent, & commits a consistent sin of omission.

WORTHY OF A RE-RELEASE

This is one of the better early Brockmann romances I`ve read. (Shame about the cover though) Written in 97, this one really is worthy of a re-release because there's an excellent suspense filled story here that managed to surprise me several times by not following the usual cookie cutter formula required of category romances, I never really knew where this was going to go; with events setting up in one direction only to end up going a very different way. And with several steamy love scenes, a tortured hero I just wanted to hug and a heroine that was well... normal (meaning that she didn't `suddenly' know how to use a gun, or annoy me with stupid talk and the usual quarrels) I had trouble putting this one down. When Brockmann's on her game theres just no one better and this quick romantic suspense gave me everything I could possibly want.

FBI agent John Miller is known throughout the department as "the robot". Still reeling from the death of his partner which he blames himself for, John is unable to sleep or eat, just barely going through the motions of living. When he's sent undercover to catch a black widow serial killer, John actually resembles the hollow, sickly cancer patient he's meant to be.

The plan is for "Johnathan Mills" to appear wealthy, in bad health and to marry their suspect Serena Westford, gathering enough evidence to take her down before she murders another husband. The plan however is not for John to fall in love with her best friend Mariah Robinson. Somehow though she's made him feel alive for the first time in years and even though he knows he's sending her mixed signals (that kiss was probably a mistake as was falling asleep on her couch after a back rub) he can't blow his cover. For as much as he wants Mariah he's going to have to follow through and marry and sleep with Serena.

As I said the story here is not as straightforward as I first thought; the antagonist is always one step ahead of the FBI and as it turns out Mariah Carver is not who she seems to be either. Oh and our strong, manly hero cries at the end which just did me in. Cheers.

Disappointing

I was disappointed with this book. It had really good potential and it just didn't seem to hit the mark. Yes, the main characters were interesting with John being regarded as "The Robot" by those in the FBI. Okay that was a good start and Mariah was a kind hearted, driven woman learning to relax. That was a good start too but the romance? Not so good, kind of unbelievable. It began to feel like there were a lot of holes in the story and some really dumb moves on the part of the so called professional agency. The undercover idea was something that I found hard to believe would get approved by people in authority over John.
I was hoping for more from the story.

This is a pretty good category romance about an FBI agent undercover to catch a black-widow serial killer (woman who marries men for their money & kills them to inherit) and a workaholic woman vacationing under an assumed name.

There are some dropped threads, possibly due to length restrictions, but not a bad read.
