The Best Introductory Book On The Scarlet Letter

Though I'm no expert and though I hold no Ph.D in either American or literary studies, I will guess that Nina Baym's little book on The Scarlet Letter is the best introduction to Hawthorne's classic novel. Miss Baym writes in a direct and jargon-free style. If she has an axe to grind, it might be that she enjoys discussing TSL as a feminist book. What makes her approach so refreshing is that she admits Hester is not a perfect person. Baym admits that, by the end of the book, both Hester and the Puritans have learned important lessons about compromise and consensus.

The need for consensus is, for Baym, Hawthorne's major theme in the book. Close behind that idea is his preoccupation with the theme of sympathy. Baym explains that Hawthorne believed all of us share the same common human nature, which enables us to sympathize with each other. Any social and political view that denies that common bond--such as what the Puritans held--is untenable and unsustainable. Laws and morals should exist to console and inspire, rather than to punish and demean.

The book's two strongest chapters are Chapter 3 - The Characters and Chapter 4 - The Scarlet Letter. In chapter 3, Baym makes the helpful observation that Chillingworth is an alter ego to Dimmesdale, and Pearl is an alter ego to Hester. She insists that these alter egos are not flesh-and-blood characters but allegorical figures that force Hester and Dimmesdale to confess their sin and rejoin society. In Chapter 4, Baym argues that the scarlet letter is a focal point for disagreements about Puritan laws and laws of Nature. She insists that the scarlet letter as a symbol underlines the theme that no one set of laws is superior to another without consensus.

The final chapter about The Scarlet Letter and the Custom House essay that precedes it is short but thorough. Baym's placement of this chapter at the end of the book implies her view that the Custom House essay has little to do with the novel. She admits that you can read either individually without missing any meaning. She admits, however, that to read them together will alter your view of both pieces. Most persuasive is her claim that the strongest link between the essay and the short novel is Hawthorne's comparison of his career in the custom house with Hester's situation with the Puritans. Too many high school instructors and college professors are still forcing students to find numerous and complex links between the essay and the book when clearly those links do not exist. Baym's comments on this subject definitely put the debate to rest.

Baym's second chapter about the setting of the novel is a little bit more specialized in its focus. It is also more critical of Hawthorne's art than any of the other chapters. Baym shows how Hawthorne's handling of Puritan history in TSL was adequate but, in several cases, sloppy. Baym forgives Hawthorne his occasional mistakes of history, but she is not as forgiving about Hawthorne's inaccurate understanding of Puritan theology and religious customs. This part of the book will probably seem dry to most non-scholars, though her understanding and explanation of actual Puritan theology is very useful and enlightening.

If you can still find a copy of this book and you have any interest in The Scarlet Letter, you should read this and keep it as a reference volume. Baym's insights on Hawthorne's book will make you rediscover the book; they will also make you wonder whether or not the Puritan bloodspot of intolerance--so far behind us in time--still affects our laws and policies.

About the Author
Thomas J. Cutler is a retired lieutenant commander and former gunner's mate second class who served in patrol craft, cruisers, destroyers, and aircraft carriers. His varied assignments included an in-country Vietnam tour, small craft command, and nine years at the U.S. Naval Academy, where he served as Executive Assistant to the Chairman of the Seamanship & Navigation Department and Associate Chairman of the History Department. While at the Academy, he was awarded the William P. Clements Award for Excellence in Education (military teacher of the year).

He is the founder and former Director of the Walbrook Maritime Academy in Baltimore. Currently he is Fleet Professor of Strategy and Policy with the Naval War College and is the Director of Professional Publishing at the U.S. Naval Institute.

Winner of the Alfred Thayer Mahan Award for Naval Literature, the U.S. Naval Institute Press Author of the Year, and the U.S. Maritime Literature Award, his published works include NavCivGuide: A Handbook for Civilians in the U.S. Navy; A Sailor's History of the U.S. Navy [one of the books in the Chief of Naval Operations Reading Program]; The Battle of Leyte Gulf; Brown Water, Black Berets: Coastal & Riverine Warfare in Vietnam; and the 22nd, 23rd (Centennial), and 24th editions of The Bluejacket's Manual. His other works include revisions of Jack Sweetman's The Illustrated History of the U.S. Naval Academy and Dutton's Nautical Navigation. He and his wife, Deborah W. Cutler, are the co-editors of the Dictionary of Naval Terms and the Dictionary of Naval Abbreviations.

His books have been published in various forms, including paperback and audio, and have appeared as main and alternate selections of the History Book Club, Military Book Club, and Book of the Month Club. He has served as a panelist, commentator, and keynote speaker on military and writing topics at many events and for various organizations, including the Naval History and Heritage Command, Smithsonian Institution, the Navy Memorial, U.S. Naval Academy, MacArthur Memorial Foundation, Johns Hopkins University, U.S. Naval Institute, Armed Forces Electronics Communications and Electronics Association, Naval War College, Civitan, and many veterans' organizations. I received my first Bluejacket's Manual in November, 1943. It was the 11th Edition.
The occasion was my entry into boot camp at the very large recruit training center in San Diego. The size of the Navy during WWII was nothing short of awesome. In 1945 there were over 3.4 million wearing Navy blue!
The BJM served me well during my World War II tour as a Pharmacist's Mate.
After four years, my enlistment expired in October, 1947. Discharged as a Pharmacist's Mate 2nd class, E-5 in today's jargon. I then spent 5 years in the Naval Reserve. My rating was changed in 1948 to Hospital Corpsman Second Class, HM2.
As Pharmacist's Mates we had always been referred to as "hospital corpsmen" and we were graduates of "Hospital Corps School" so nothing really changed. I still have my certificate of graduation from "Corps School" in San Diego, dated March, 1944. I had just turned 19 years old.
About 10 years ago I bought a 22nd edition of the BJM at the local Naval Air Station, Joint Reserve Base, here in Fort Worth, Texas.
I'll always love the U.S. Navy and will enjoy looking through the 24th edition as I celebrate my 85th birthday March 15th.

You need this.

This is a MUST HAVE if you're going to join the Navy. It covers everything you could possibly think about in regards to the Navy, and it's customs and protocols. LEARN RANK AND RATE RECOGNITION. It will help you out a lot, especially as a new recruit, when you're able to correctly greet someone as "YN1" instead of just "petty officer".

Going to boot camp...

I got this because I was in DEP for the Navy and I wanted to be as prepared for boot camp as possible. Ultimately Bootcamp uses their own training guide for the first 7 weeks then you get a chance to read this manual, and this is more specific to the fleet. I feel I knew more going in than anyone else because I read this before I shipped out. I read it again at bootcamp (Everyone is issued one) and everything made more sense. If you want to know about the USN, how simple things like painting (lay on, lay off) to historic battles and communicating with flag, this book covers a TON of stuff with out the bull crap in other books. straight forward book.

Don Kulick is Professor of Anthropology at New York University. His published works include Language Shift and Cultural Reproduction (1992), Taboo (1995, with Margaret Willson) and Travesti (1998). He is co-editor of the journals Ethnos and GLQ.

Elinor Ochs is Professor of Anthropology at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Michael Silverstein is the Charles F. Grey Distinguished Service Professor of Anthropology, of Linguistics, and of Psychology in the Committee on Interdisciplinary Studies in the Humanities at the University of Chicago. He is the author, coauthor, or editor of many books, most recently Creatures of Politics.

A fascinating book on Javanese Indonesian ever written

The Javanese have great pride in their language which for some people it is considered as the language of the feudalism. Not being able to speak the appropriate Javanese especially to the elders is embarassing: a Javanese should speak good Javanese. But now, the national language has caused great change. The author has made thorough studies regarding it. The book will make a comprehensive reference for researchers and scholars interested in the field of language shift. There is no such book that gives a full description about the language shift from Javanese to Indonesian.

Shifting language? Errington is simply shifty.

Errington strikes again. In this book Errington repeats his sophomoric fallacies of ignoring all established theories on the subject. His own theories entangled in his convoluted and verbose prose seem to exist more to contradict the foundations of anthropological though such as Steven Pinker's, than to offer intelligent and reasonable alternatives. Academia is not a sandbox, and Errington should stop kicking over big kids' sandcastles.

About the Author

Joel Hoffman lectures and teaches classes on biblical and rabbinic Hebrew and translation at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. He is the head translator for Jewish Lights’ multi-volume prayerbook and commentary series, My People’s Prayerbook. He lives in the NYC area.

Possibly the most exiting book I've read in a decade.

In The Beginning - A short History of the Hebrew Language by Joel M. Hoffman is possibly the most exiting book I've read in a decade. Hoffman's writing style is chipper and friendly; I never thought I'd be grinning widely while reading a book on linguistic theory. But it's more than that. In The Beginning is almost a coming of age novel, not just of the Hebrew language but of the whole of human speech. I'm sure it's often underestimated what the Hebrew language has done for mankind, but Hoffman explains and reveals with so much obvious fun that any reader with even the most modest interest in language feels quickened and finally informed.

The ability to read and write equals the ability to preserve data and complex thought. It equals the ability of a culture to form a reflective continuum the way the universe forms time. But written text used to be nothing more than a string of vague consonantal hints towards spoken words. Esoteric knowledge was always a key without which the text could not be unlocked, and writing was merely an extension of the oral tradition. All of this changed with the incredible invention of the Hebrews to use symbols for vowels. When this art became established reading and writing became available to the masses, and it competes with the printing press for the predicate of most important invention that lead to modern civilization.

Hoffman tells the story with as much feel for flair as for clarity, and In The Beginning treads confidently and with a continuous sense of awe upon the stage of evolution. It lists the unknowns without shame or the idle consolation of conjecture, and revitalizes petrified certainties into wells of alternatives. After a brief introductory chapter Hoffman reviews the 'Rules of the Game,' which is a general essay on the 'Three Theories of the World,' namely 1) The Dumb-Luck Theory-- everything happens by chance and that's it then; 2) The God-Theory-- everything happens because of God and that's it then; and 3) The Science Theory--there is un underlying order to the universe that we humans can understand.

The language in which the Bible was written is a formidable phenomenon and every serious student of the Bible should at least be acquainted with some of the achievements of this language. The Bible is by no means just another book in a bookstore, but a bright bolt of light that caused the bookstore!

Vowels do make a difference

This is a most interesting and enlightening treatise, written with scholarly authoritativeness. The author covers his subject most thoroughly and eloquently, even, as the title claims, it is a "short" history. However, his claim that Hebrew formed the original basis for ancient Greek and Latin would have been better served if he had provided more compelling evidence and documentation for this very startling assertion. The similarity of Aleph-Bet and Alpha-Beta isn't entirely convincing. Yet, in all fairness, the author does make many other revelatory and absorbing points throught his book which certainly seem incontrovertible based on his scholastic background.

A great read for both a linguist and a casual learner!

Dr. Joel Hoffman's book "In the Beginning" is an excellent introduction into the study of the centuries-long history of Hebrew and its grammar. Hoffman manages to pack a lot of information into a very concise book and his writing style makes it a real pleasure to read. But what distinguishes this book from most books on the history of Hebrew is that it is written by a professional linguist from the perspective of contemporary linguistic theory, which does not equate language with its writing system, or label languages as "primitive" or "complex". Hoffman analyzes (admittedly sparse) information about the state of the Hebrew language in the last three millennia as a linguist would analyze any other language (living or dead). Hoffman does not pretend to have the final word on the subject. Instead, his book provides an excellent "Beginning" for a linguistically sophisticated study of the diachronic adventures of the Hebrew language. Anyone interested in Hebrew should read this book.

I love this book!

Believe it or not this is the most used management book on my shelf. As I have progressed in my career, I have discovered that "being in charge" is a myth. Even at the apex of an organization you are beholden to someone if not more "bosses". So regardless of your place within your organization this book provides pratical tips on improving your effectiveness. Of particular value and insight are the comparison of leadership and management, the concept of counterdependence, and the internal and external customer discussion. I have shared this information and it has been well received by collegues, at management retreats and with university professors. At less than half the price of the typical soft cover management book you may consider purchasing two. One for you and one to share.

Another Winning Title!

Geoffrey M. Bellman provides strategies that support personnel can use to bring about positive change in their organizations. A comprehensive table of contents allows you to go directly to the area of the book that most interests you. In fact, the author designed the book to be read in pieces and many topics stand on their own in manageable chunks. This alone makes the book a useful tool for people who are interested in "leading from the middle." The informal writing style and the many useful lists make these ideas accessible to readers who lack formal business training, and thus are likelier to work in support roles. Bellman believes that instead of complaining about your lack of power, you should build your power and get things done. We at getAbstract.com recommend this book to anyone who isn't CEO (yet).

Brilliant!

If I take all of the management books I have read from my time at University till now and stack them up they may form a balance with this brilliant book. The wisdom, down to earth style and practical insight is not just uncommon, it is extrodinary. This book has done more to help me in different management situations than any other. The structured approach to tackling life as a manager is a solid base which leaves enough room for personal style and growth. Anyone who does not read this is at a disadvantage.

George E. Rejda is a nationally known expert on private insurance and social insurance programs.� He is a Past President of the American Risk and Insurance Association. His primary research areas are Social Security and unemployment insurance. He is a founding member of the National Academy of Social Insurance, initially limited to 125 experts on Social Security in the United States.� He is the founding editor of Benefits Quarterly in the employee benefits field and also served as Communication and Notes editor for the Journal of Risk and Insurance.� He has published numerous books, articles, and other publications, several of which were used by the Insurance Institute of America in its professional program. He is a former member of the examination committee of the Insurance Institute of America, which designs and administers professional examinations to employees in the property and casualty insurance industry. His textbook, Principles of Risk Management and Insurance, is widely used by colleges and universities throughout the United States.� Rejda received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Pennsylvania where he studied risk and insurance as a Huebner Foundation Fellow in the Wharton School. He is a former member of the Administrative Board of the Huebner Foundation for Insurance Education at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. He is also a Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU).� During his career at UNL, he has taught more than 13,000 students.

Book for school purposes

The book was shipped timely and was in good condition. However, the description stated that there were no markings/highlighter in the book but when I received it, there were many chapters that had highlighter. It wasn't a problem because the text that was highlighted is what I would have marked as important.

The book is effective at teaching Risk Management and Insurance and easy to understand and follow along.

About the Author
Klaus Solberg S�ilen is an Associate Professor at Halmstad University, Sweden. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Intelligence Studies in Business (JISIB) and Senior Editor of the International Journal of Innovation Science (IJIS). He has published half a dozen books and numerous scientific articles for journals like Journal of Business Research, European Business Review and Knowledge Organization. Prior to his academic career he worked for ten years in industry, the last three being at KPMG Oslo. He is often invited as a speaker at different professional events and also a consultant to respected organisations.
