and trying to find some joy and meaning
By Madison C.
Written in a thoughtful, gracious manner for those of us facing lives constrained by illnesses, and trying to find some joy and meaning, despite the pain and loss. Of the twenty or so books recommended to me by various friends for this situation, this was the only one that felt both "real" and not preachy.

The Billion Dollar Monopoly (R) Swindle, by Ralph Anspach

Monopoly games are notoriously long but the one which triggered the events in this book really got out of hand--it's now twenty-five years old. The problem was that one thing led to another and first I played Monopoly with the family and then I invented a game called Anti-Monopoly. Being a Professor of Economics, I decided to market my idea on my own which turned out to be a lot of laughs (on me) at first . . . but I learned. . .and eventually I developed it into a national best-seller with the help of a few loyal associates. At which point, Parker Brothers showed its gratitude for my buying its sacred game by hitting us with a major trademark infringement suit. While this caused us a lot of trouble, the law suit boomeranged into a giant mistake for Rich Uncle Pennybags, like trading Baltic for the Boardwalk even-steven.

True, we had to take the smug symbol of riches all the way to the United States Supreme Court before we prevailed, enduring six years of being banned from the market and having 40,000 of our games buried in a garbage dump as an arrogant but ill-fated object lesson to other challengers of the Monopoly monopoly. All that's described in the book but another big part of it tells how the law suit stimulated me to check out the background of Monopoly and how I was almost squashed by the skeletons which started to rattle out of the closet. My detective work wasn't as easy as winning Monopoly when you own the good properties because I was up against a mom and apple pie legend about the origins of Monopoly. Central casting in this epic tale was the rags to riches story of a man named Charles Darrow, a supposedly gutsy victim of the Great Depression who invented Monopoly to feed his pregnant wife and kids but was then catapulted into countless riches as the creator of the most popular, privately-owned board game in history.

One mystery phone call on a TV show triggered the hunt which eventually unmasked our hero as an impostor and proved that the whole legend was a corporate- sponsored fraud fabricated to save the business from bankruptcy. I also discovered that Parker Brother's Monopoly was based on a folkgame named monopoly which had been originated by a woman, Elizabeth Magie. Not only that but it had been played on personalized, homemade boards all over the eastern United States for twenty-three years before our folk hero arranged to become a proud papa.

The Monopoly in your closet is the Atlantic City version of this folkgame. It was created by some ingenious Quakers who taught school in Atlantic City. Apart from some designs made by a graphic artist, Darrow's sole contribution to the invention was to copy the Quakers' creation with the faithfulness of a medieval monk transcribing a sacred text. The original work was then suppressed as part of a business scheme to dump Monopoly's real world competition and the nation's media, from Sports Illustrated to The New York Times was conned into trumpeting the fake story.

Yes, ironically enough, the game in which players rip off tenants and utility users and dump competing players right off the board with their monopoly muscle was itself illegally monopolized by means of a fraudulent patent monopoly. And the engineers of the fraud laughed all the way to the bank as they raked in monopoly profits and gouged you and me for a cool billion dollars. And nobody knew about it until Monopoly decided to push Anti-Monopoly off the market--and this book came to be written.

Amazon.com Review
Part detective novel, part history, and part horror story, The Billion Dollar Monopoly Swindle not only recounts the true history behind one of the world's most popular board games but also reveals a world where the law sometimes seems as arbitrary and unfair as a "Go directly to jail" card. When Ralph Anspach released his game Anti-Monopoly in 1973, he suddenly found himself in the crosshairs of the formidable Parker Brothers legal machine, which claimed that his use of the word monopoly violated copyright laws. While conducting research to gauge the strength of Parker Brothers' case, Anspach discovered that the corporate giant might not even have the rights to the game.

His investigation revealed the existence of a board game called the Landlord's Game that had been played at least 30 years before Parker Brothers published Monopoly in 1935. When Charles B. Darrow was introduced to this game by a group of Quakers, he copied their board and rules verbatim (even duplicating their misspelling of "Marvin Gardens"), then sold it as his own creation. Parker Brothers supported him, putting a copy of the "story of Monopoly" that cited him as creator in every box.

As for the Anti-Monopoly case, Anspach faced down the game moguls in a battle that went all the way to the Supreme Court (and included an unexpected appearance by future independent counsel Kenneth Starr). You can still play Anti-Monopoly today--and Anspach has even started packaging the original version in the game boxes as a bonus. --Matthew Baldwin

Review
Written in detective story fashion. . . the professor reconstructed the . . .fraud that Darrow and his Parker Brothers sponsors perpetrated: buying up rival patents, intimidating would be imitators, rewriting history. Anspach has blazed a trail (and) written a great cautionary tale against the trust we too often repose in public relations hype. . .belongs in every summer cottage that now contains a game of Monopoly (or Anti-Monopoly). By far the fullest version yet of a battle that illuminates key elements of American business history from the populism of the 1980s to the . . .1980's. (Anspach) was always something of a swashbucklera teenage refugee from Hitler's Germany who fought for America in the Pacific, then surreptitiously shipped out to Israel for its 1948 war of independence. . ..(He also relates) his early startup difficulties, the search for evidence, the court battles. -- David Warsh, Boston Sunday Globe, August 16, 1998

ONE A Strange Phone Conversation

It's August 20, 1974. I'm sitting in a television studio on a sweltering day in Portland, Oregon flogging the Anti-Monopoly game I had invented about three years earlier. . . The game company I had created for my Anti-Monopoly game was pushing me into these publicity tours to regenerate our sales because Parker Brothers' legal assault had melted down our purchase orders from about a million to 30,000. It was a public television interview program with listener call-ins. . .

A Mrs. Stevenson joined us. "First of all Dr. Anspach, I hate to date myself with a story going back all the way to the mid-thirties, but I think Parker Brothers has a lot of nerve suing you for getting a free ride on their game when they stole monopoly in the first place."

"They what it?" I said and paused, afraid even to breathe her word since I didn't want a libel suit slapped on us. We were having enough trouble with the other one. After all, I, like everybody else in the world, knew exactly how Monopoly had been invented and theft had nothing to do with it. On the contrary, what had happened was one of the best-known chronicles of Yankee ingenuity and well-rewarded initiative.

This inspirational real-life story was found on every instruction sheet inserted into every Monopoly box so that people could dream of the real wealth to be earned in this land of opportunity as they played with make-believe Monopoly money. And if the players missed the story on the rules, they got a chance to read all about it in its perennial retelling in newspapers, magazine articles, and books, or to hear about it on radio and TV shows.

The hero was Charles B. Darrow, a Philadelphian who had lost his job in the Great Depression which caused terrible hardship to his pregnant wife and little son. But Darrow did not despair or look for welfare handouts. One evening, Darrow sat down at his kitchen table and "devised out of thin air" a game in which people could fantasize about riches no longer attainable during this collapse of our capitalist system. . . Parker Brothers. . . licensed the game from him--and the best selling board game in history was launched. A grateful corporation rewarded this real life Horatio Alger so generously that "he would soon be able to retire for life at the age of 46 and become a millionaire gentleman farmer, world traveler--especially to ancient cities--motion picture photographer, and collector of exotic orchid species."

Having refreshed my memory, I went on a little testily. "Whatever gives you that idea? Somebody Darrow invented Monopoly and he worked with Parker Brothers".

"Of course," added the host approvingly. "During the Great Depression."

"He stole it," Mrs. Stevenson persisted. "I had a good friend in college who was one of the few women of her day to become an aeronautical engineer. She swore to me that her father and friends had created the exact same Monopoly game now sold by Parker Brothers, Atlantic City street names and all ."

The host of the show passed me a piece of paper on which he had written in big block letters "Careful!!!! Libel. Kook." I nodded to him and moved on cautiously. "Fascinating. Can you remember any more details about your friend's story?"

"Well, I can tell you one thing. My friend was a real sober person. Remember, she majored in engineering, but whenever Parker Brothers had something in the papers about that Darrow person, she would practically throw a fit about Parker Brothers working in cahoots with that con-man."

The host, an inveterate note writer, wrote in bigger block letters: "MORE CONSPIRACY THEORIES. SAY ALLEGED FOR GOD'S SAKES."

"Can you remember anything else about your friend's alleged invention story, Mrs. Stevenson?" I prompted.

"Anything else? Let's see now. She said it happened in the early thirties, when she was just a little girl, but she could recall very clearly watching her father and his friends working out the details of the game. And even then they called it monopoly, though that was quite a bit before Darrow and Parker Brothers arrived on the scene."

"Do you recollect your friend's name, by any chance?" I asked, thinking of how I should get her social security number, current address and the number of her drivers license--just in case Stevenson wasn't a kook after all.

"Of course I remember her name. Lord, I don't think I'll ever forget Joanna. She was a real whiz kid, that gal."

"Go on," I pressed her. "Joanna who. . .?"

"Oh, well, that's another matter. She's been married and remarried several times and I've lost track of her so I couldn't possibly know her last name. But I can tell you she'd be about fifty right now, and she graduated from NYU where they had a special wartime program to train women as aeronautical engineers, what with all the men being away in the army. But I'm afraid that's all I can tell you about her."

The host had had enough. "This makes no sense to me, Mrs. Stevenson. Just for starters, if the game was stolen from Joanna's friends and family, why didn't they complain to Parker Brothers, a very reputable company, or haul Darrow to court so they could get back the millions you claim did not belong to Mr. Darrow."

This stopped her for only a moment. "Right you are. I remember asking Joanna the exact same question. She said part of the reason was a religion thing. They were Quakers and you know the way Quakers are; they're very peaceful and they don't like to quarrel in court."

"Not very likely," I thought while the host shook his head in disbelief. She pretty well lost me at this point.

Still, I jotted down the information about Joanna No-name. You never know. Then I schlepped on to Seattle, the next stop on my publicity tour.

Fascinating and Original
By imarlowe@sirius.com
I found this book riveting and very well-written, a startling indictment of not only Parker Brothers (for claiming false invention of a 30-year old folk game and securing a fraudulent patent)but also of the American judicial system, which clearly will roll over and play dead when confronted with an army of corporate lawyers. While the earlier book by Saxon does discuss a precursor to Monopoly, it says nothing about Parker Brothers' underhanded dealings. Nor does it tell the story of how the game fell into the hands of "inventor" Charles Darrow. Another book on the subject by Orbanes (written essentially by and for Parker Bothers/Hasbro) is merely an attempt to whitewash the whole sticky mess so delightfully uncovered by Mr. Anspach. A fine and fascinating read.

Brilliant book !
By tom@kuchenbrod.de
Have just read Dr Anspach's book from cover to cover without a break. A fascinating expose of what must rank as one of the biggest cover- up stories of all time.
Mr Blub's review is correct in that Saxton's earlier book does report that Lizzie Magie's 1904 Landlords Game was a forerunner to Monopoly. It contains nothing however about the transformation of that game through the monopoly folklore to the Darrow/Parker Bros Atlantic City copy. Nor does it contain anything about the cover- up which has served so well to monopolise Monopoly for so many years.
The book is a product of Dr Anspach's detective work which was validated by the American Courts and is to be commended in stark contrast to the corporate sanctioned Orbanes book. This offering attempts to preserve some credit for Darrow while erroneously( albeit cleverly) exonerating Parker Bros from the swindle.

A thrilling detective story debunking an American myth.
By sreiss@ibm.net
Anyone who loves Monopoly(R), like I do, and thinks they know the story of the game, like I did, will not be able to put this book down! The official story of the game's origin is a lie. For me, the crushing piece of evidence concerns the correct spelling of MarvEn Gardens. Check it out.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Young Adult Book of the Month, May 2014: E. Lockhart’s novel, We Were Liars, is clever, alluring, and wildly addictive. Each summer the wealthy, seemingly perfect, members of the Sinclair family gather on their private island. We Were Liars is the story of those annual reunions; in particular what happened during a summer that protagonist Cadence is unable to remember. Prejudice, greed, and shifting patriarchal favoritism among the three adult sisters contrasts with the camaraderie and worldview of the teenage cousins and their dear friend Gat. Lazy days of sticky lemonades on the roof and marathon Scrabble games give way to twisty suspense, true love, and good intentions gone horribly wrong. We Were Liars is a story that begs to be read in one sitting. --Seira Wilson

From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up—Cadence Sinclair Easton comes from an old-money family, headed by a patriarch who owns a private island off of Cape Cod. Each summer, the extended family gathers at the various houses on the island, and Cadence, her cousins Johnny and Mirren, and friend Gat (the four "Liars"), have been inseparable since age eight. During their fifteenth summer however, Cadence suffers a mysterious accident. She spends the next two years—and the course of the book—in a haze of amnesia, debilitating migraines, and painkillers, trying to piece together just what happened. Lockhart writes in a somewhat sparse style filled with metaphor and jumps from past to present and back again—rather fitting for a main character struggling with a sudden and unexplainable life change. The story, while lightly touching on issues of class and race, more fully focuses on dysfunctional family drama, a heart-wrenching romance between Cadence and Gat, and, ultimately, the suspense of what happened during that fateful summer. The ending is a stunner that will haunt readers for a long time to come.—Jenny Berggren, formerly at New York Public Library

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Cadence Sinclair Eastman is the oldest grandchild of a preeminent family. The Sinclairs have the height, the blondness, and the money to distinguish them, as well as a private island off the coast of Massachusetts called Beechwood. Harris, the family patriarch, has three daughters: Bess, Carrie, and Penny, who is Cadence’s mother. And then there is the next generation, “the Liars”: Cadence; Johnny, the first grandson; Mirren, sweet and curious; and outsider Gat, an Indian boy and the nephew of Carrie’s boyfriend. Cadence, Johnny, Mirren, and Gat are a unit, especially during “summer 15,” the phrase they use to mark their fifteenth year on Beechwood—the summer that Cady and Gat fall in love. When Lockhart’s mysterious, haunting novel opens, readers learn that Cady, during this summer, has been involved in a mysterious accident, in which she sustained a blow to the head, and now suffers from debilitating migraines and memory loss. She doesn’t return to Beechwood until summer 17, when she recovers snippets of memory, and secrets and lies—as well as issues of guilt and blame, love and truth—all come into play. Throughout the narrative, Lockhart weaves in additional fairy tales, mostly about three beautiful daughters, a king, and misfortune. Surprising, thrilling, and beautifully executed in spare, precise, and lyrical prose, Lockhart spins a tragic family drama, the roots of which go back generations. And the ending? Shhhh. Not telling. (But it’s a doozy).HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Lockhart’s latest is unlike anything she’s done before. With a Printz Honor to back her, plus a major marketing campaign—and a promotional quote from John Green—this is poised to be big. Grades 7-12. --Ann Kelley

GREAT, not perfect...
By Hayley
While I found it quite difficult to sympathize with Cady and her ability to be so, entirely self absorbed, I did think the pacing of the story was very, very great. The reveal of the secret was a little confusing at first because the writing style of Lockhart made things not meant to be taken literally very hard to not be taken literally. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the mysterious plot and actions of all the characters. Gat was the only one I actually related to, but in the end, I was left feeling sad and angry with all of them and the way things ended. The values and themes discussed in the book are very worthwhile and deep (however cheesey that may sound), and it was nice to see a mention of racism and race in general in this book. Very emotional, gripping read--I totally recommend it.

It's just okay
By minikawa
The book is written from Cadence Sinclair’s point of view. It revolves around an elite, old rich family, the Sinclair’s, and the summers they spent in their private island, Beechwood, in Massachusetts. The Sinclair’s include Grandpa and Grandma, their 3 beautiful, blonde daughters and the grand kids. There are four houses in Beechwood, the main house is Clairmont which belongs to Grandpa and Grandma and 3 houses for their daughters – Windemere, Cuddletown and Red Gate. The eldest of the grandkids is Cady, followed by Johnny, then Mirren and the rest are what they call the “littles”, the younger batch of Sinclair’s. During the year when Cady, Johnny and Mirren were eight, Johnny’s friend, Gat (who is a nephew of Johnny’s mom’s partner), started to join them in the island. They call it Summer Eight and that’s when the family started calling the four of them the Liars. Eight months before Summer Fifteen, Granny Tipper died. Right before Summer Fifteen, Cady’s dad left her and her mom. During that summer, Cady realized that she is in love with Gat and Gat is in love with her but Gat has a girlfriend back home. After that summer, things fell apart. Cady got into an accident, she doesn’t remember what happened, she got sick, sufferred migraines, and had to take a break from school. Gat didn’t visit her. Johnny and Mirren won’t answer her calls and emails. On Summer Sixteen, they didn’t let her go back to Beechwood and instead she and her dad went to Europe. On Summer Seventeen, they let her go back to the Island. She saw her Liars once again. She found out that her granddad had completely replaced Clairmont with a New Clairmont. Everybody, even the littles, are still keeping their mouth shut about Summer Fifteen and she is determined to find out. The rest of the book deals with Cady trying to recall what happened until finally, the truth is revealed and it is just better to lie about it.

The book depicts a family who seemed so perfect on the outside and in order to maintain that picture perfect image, they need to hide their feelings (even among each other), ignore and forget the bad things by using money as cover and act normal – always, even when it hurts. I like the rawness of the Sinclairs. They are beautifully messed up and I believe they are real. How some people raised by money actually end up unsuccessful. How they will fight each other on the littlest of things because they don’t know how to live without it. How one incident can automatically bond them together and make them remember that family is still family.

The finest thing about this book, however, is the Gone Girl twist – I didn’t really see (or even guessed) that one coming. And it is only because of that that I think this book is okay. I am an impatient reader and I don’t see the purpose of all the other chapters leading to the big reveal. I think it was just put there to heighten the suspense. I really didn’t get a lot from this book. The writing is just okay. I can’t relate with Cady, she is just weird. Her relationship with Gat is equally weird. It seems to me that she was bound to fall in love with Gat because Gat is the only non-relative on the Island. I didn’t feel any romantic connections between them. Everything seems forced in order to make a story or a climax similar to Gone Girl. Granted, you will really be surprised but I think it is easy to twist the facts or to make your story go that way to lead it to that big climax. If it is an original idea, I would be in awe but since the author said that she was inspired by Gone Girl, then I guess it is just that – okay.

How it made me feel/Takeaways:
Bored. Spoiled. Surprised. Calm. At the end of the day, family is still family. There are more important things than money. If we are in it together, we should all be responsible and be held accountable even for one person’s mistakes.

Favorite lines:
Johnny, he is bounce, effort, and snark.
Mirren, she is sugar, curiosity, and rain.
Gat, he was contemplation and enthusiasm. Ambition and strong coffee.

Rating: 3/5 I can’t even use my hearts because I don’t ❤️ it.

WOW!
By Courtney Mal
We Were Liars is not the book you're expecting. Don't try to guess the ending, don't try to 'think ahead', just enjoy the beautiful story E. Lockhart weaves. It's weird and sweet and magical. Yes, it's a little whiny and pretentious, but that just serves to make everything else come together so heartbreakingly beautifully at the end. I feel like when people read books like this and there's rich, entitled characters that they get mad that it's whiny and entitled. That's who the characters are! That's what they're supposed to be!

I'm intentionally being vague in this review as I don't want to spoil it. This is one of those books that you'll read once and just think 'what did i just read?'. Then you go back and back and back, re-reading, trying to piece together everything from the beginning.

I love this book and would recommend it to almost anyone. Keep an open mind and a sharp eye, and just enjoy the ride. You will follow Cadence and her friends, the 'liars' as they struggle to accept their wealthy, screwed up family. It's beautiful, it's magical, it's heartbreaking, and most of all it's life. Just go with it, you won't regret it.

Are We All Postracial Yet? (Debating Race), by David Theo Goldberg

We hear much talk about the advent of a “postracial” age. The election of Barack Obama as President of the U.S. was held by many to be proof that we have once and for all moved beyond race. The Swedish government has even gone so far as to erase all references to race from its legislative documents.

However, as Ferguson, MO, and countless social statistics show, beneath such claims lurk more sinister shadows of the racial everyday, institutional, and structural racisms persist and renew themselves beneath the polish of nonraciality. A conundrum lies at its very heart as seen when the election of a Black President was taken to be the pinnacle of postraciality.

In this sparkling essay, David Theo Goldberg seeks to explain this conundrum, and reveals how the postracial is merely the afterlife of race, not its demise. Postraciality is the new logic of raciality.

Review

"It would be tempting to assume that there is a yes or no answer to this work’s titular question, however, it soon shows its complexity as the mind ponders over and over it: are we really postracial? What does ‘postraciality’ evoke? Is this the end to racism? We demand answers and David Theo Goldberg – as part of Polity’s Debating Race series – leaves no stone unturned in this distinctive essay on race."
Inky Needles

"This pointed, thoughtful and readable book is a bold intervention in the politics of undoing racial hierarchy. For too long, anti-racism has been inhibited by the difficulties involved in moving beyond critique. David Goldberg has risen to the cosmopolitan challenge involved in breaking that logjam. With characteristic rigor and wit, he shows how antiracist politics can be reconfigured in combative, practical and affirmative forms."
Paul Gilroy, King’s College London

"This Book reveals the neo-raciality masked by the claims of the post-racial. The underlying structures of economic, political, and social inequalities have seen the afterlife of racism in police uniforms walk the streets of America openly amidst the cries of ‘I can’t breathe’ from its victims. A must read."
wa Thiong’o Ng g , University of California, Irvine

"David Theo Goldberg’s trenchant meditation on the challenges to anti-racist remediation reveals a structured cultural silence about deep social shape-shifting forms of inequality. The very term ‘post-racial’ places racism's harms beyond critical analysis, rendered unreachable because located in the past, indecipherable because erased from language; and ungovernable because assigned to private rather than collective address. This excellent study explores the limits of ‘post-racialism’ in an epoch of denial, unsparingly dissecting the common attributes of interesting forms of prejudice."
Patricia Williams, Columbia Law School

"Goldberg's Are We All Postracial Yet? provocatively and powerfully interrogates the idea of the Postracial as something more than an aspiration, but in fact the basis for a new phase of racial arrangements, shaped by shifts in the political economy, domestic and international law, and geopolitics. The work is theoretically rich and probing with both global and local implications. It deepens race critical theory, and furthers our understanding of the ongoing significance of race."
Imani Perry Hughes Rogers Professor of African American Studies, Princeton University and author of More Beautiful and More Terrible: The Embrace and Transcendence of Racial Inequality in the U.S. (2011)

"Are we all postracial yet? David Theo Goldberg in answering this question with a resounding “yes” explores the postracial as a logic and condition that enables racism to persist and proliferate. This book offers a sharp, wise and unflinching critique of the racism of the postracial. It is also a deeply optimistic book: there is no better way of demanding an alternative than by demonstrating its necessity."

I don't think I'm at all in the target audience for this book
By P. Mann
The answer to the titular question seems to me a fairly obvious no. Now that that's out of the way, I'll turn to the inside of the book. As I write this, it is 2016, and much of what Goldberg discusses (events in Ferguson, Missouri, e.g.) seems to have a limited shelf life. I can't imagine that the arguments, such as they are in here, will have as much direct relevance in a few years. The core issues will, I suspect, but much of the focus of the book, not surprisingly, is on current events that will fade from memory or be replaced before long.

The writing is interesting. At times, it is clear, but at other times, it exhibits unmistakable shades of academic excess. For example, there are sentences like "Postraciality amounts to a general social ecology within which race and racisms are supposedly outmoded but where, in fact, racist expression has gone viral" that may not be as concise as they could be but are reasonably clear. And then there are sentences like "Dissolution of modern subjectivity, emblematic in the microbic molecules of dust, as Dick (1954/1992) so vividly conveys, is exacerbated in the late modern proliferation of geographies of walking."

I found interesting points and arguments in this essay, but ultimately, I thought that it's more for academics than for people like me. I don't state that as a criticism. I make that point as an observation. I certainly don't think that there must be a divide between academic writing and general audience (and would cite Foucault as an example), but there almost certainly is one here.

Waffling and posturing, and precious little actual analysis or argument.
By Worddancer Redux
I hoped that someone who disliked this book less would review it before I had to. No such luck.

The topic (or family of related topics) is very important, and of both academic and popular interest. And the book is short, so one might reasonably have hoped that the author would quickly do some frame-setting, and present exposition, analysis, and argument that were clear and accessible.

Again, no such luck. What the book in fact contains is an inordinate amount of waffling and posturing, and virtually no analysis and explanation. To make things worse (if such a thing is possible) the author repeatedly lays claim to having presented arguments that.....simply were not there.

I hate to post reviews of books that I thought had virtually nothing going for them, and avoid doing it. But requesting and receiving the ARC through the Vine program obliges me to file a review. Sadly, apart from acknowledging the importance of the topic, I cannot recommend this little book.

Well presented
By sanoe.net
It seems to me that the answer to the question of "Are We All Postracial Yet?" is fairly obvious, but a gut feeling based on observation is one thing and reading it from someone who actually studies and researches such things is different. That is why I selected David Theo Goldberg's "Are We all Postracial Yet?" to read. Goldberg covers a lot in this under-200 pages book. He covers the past, conditions, logistics, etc before entering the last chapter which addresses the title question. The "answer" wasn't a spoiler and I did feel that he gave a solid and understandable presentation of how he arrived at it.

Review
"At last -- Catholic manga that's as good as the popular stuff. It even reads right to left! I overheard my daughter's friend say, 'I always think of popes as always being popes. I never think of them growing up.' This manga will give kids such good thoughts." -- Mike Aquilina Executive Vice-President, St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology, author of many books, "Endorsement"

"There are many books on Pope Benedict XVI, most of which are academic in nature. Precious few of them are intended for younger readers. Habemus Papam is a wonderful contribution to biographical literature on Pope Benedict XVI, and especially helpful in conveying a positive introduction to the Holy Father to a new generation of Catholic youth." -- Christopher Blosser, founder, The Ratzinger Fan Club "Endorsement"

..".captures Pope Benedict's life magnificently...The books are excellent for tweens and teens (and adults, too) and should be spread around. Evangelization comes in many forms and this manga format may just be the answer to those who need to hear the Gospel message." -- Mater et Magistra Magazine "Endorsement"

A personal portrait of a private, but great man
By Henry
The author and artist did a fantastic job on painting such a wonderful portrait of the personal side of such a public man. It's even more amazing that the majority of the storyline is based on true events! I think this readable form will definitely make the pope much more relate-able and clears up many common misconceptions about the man, his role, and his reputation. Of the many religious, theological and philosophical books that I've encountered, this one is definitely a truly thought-provoking and deeply touching at the same time. Some of the flashbacks weren't easy to follow, but they made sense in the course of the storyline. I thoroughly enjoyed the biographical, educational, and especially the personal aspects of this novel. I would highly recommend anyone who already has an opinion or wants to have an opinion about the pope to read this and get to know him.

Great gift for all tweens and teens who want to know about a great leader
By Mary G
Habemus Papam: Pope Benedict XVI is a fabulous resource for learning about Pope Benedict ... the man of faith and love who has often been misrepresented, misinterpreted in our secular world. The story, written by renowned Catholic author, Regina Doman, captures Pope Benedict's life magnificently. Within the manga-story telling genre, Doman has captured his fears, his sacrifices, his love of family. But, most importantly, Doman has captured the Holy Father's life-long faith and trust in God's providence, in Divine wisdom.

The book opens with then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger at the Papal Conclave. He cannot believe anyone would want him to be Pope. He is scared of the responsibilities and his lack of skills to guide the Church during the turbulent 21st century. But his prayer, his answer to God's call is not "no" but rather a reiteration of the Blessed Mother's: "Thy will be done".

The story then shifts to flashback: to young Joseph's life in pre-Hitler Bavaria; his father's work against the rising Nazi menace; the move from their home-town to get away from possible retributions as Hitler rises to power. As Joseph becomes a teen-ager, pressured to join the Hitler Youth Movement, to join-up and fight for the "Fatherland", Joseph is again filled with fear and uncertainty. But rather than giving up or giving in, he again prays for wisdom and again accepts God's providence and protection: "Thy will be done."

The book continues, describing specific events that defined Benedict's pastoral and academic life and his constant "yes"; bringing the story back to the present and World Youth days and papal activities.

But Habemus Papam is not an in-depth analysis of Pope Benedict's life. Doman avoided the deep theology and Catholic teachings prevalent in so much of Pope Benedict's work in order to make the book attractive to the primary audience: tweens and teens. Instead, she focused on those parts of his life that suit the manga-style: the majestic mountains of Bavaria, the conflicts with the Nazis, the heroism of Pope Benedict's predecessor, Blessed John Paul II. And the story she weaves is entertaining ... while evangelizing.

I highly recommend this book for all tweens and teens who want to know about the man behind the myths, the man who loves God above all else and puts his faith in Him. Excellent!

A ray of truth amid all the nasty gossip
By Mrs Cookie Baker
I loved this manga story. It is based on very reliable sources and depicts the life of Pope Benedict the Great. The author is very careful to note in back which bits are fictitious, and there are only a couple of parts that just add characterisation.
Very informative about the life of the Vatican too and the changes and challenges that have befallen it. Although in manga form it is very moving in parts, such as where the Holy Father takes the rap for all the evil-doers who have infiltrated the Church, as only Christ would have done, and he even met with victims of abuse and comforted them personally.
I came away with a renewed respect and affection for this holy, humble, erudite yet loving Bible scholar whom we are greatly gifted to have as the leader of the Christian world. Whether folk follow his wise guidance is another matter; there are many rebellious spirits.
This Holy Father is a model of courage and virtue and this book and the illustrations, captures this very well.
I warmly recommend this book for Catholics and anyone who would like to learn a little something about what the much derided Papacy really is.
