I've always appreciated the work of Sharon Harris and the Advocates, and this new book adds to their great resources. Great tips, great advice on words to use and words to avoid, and on the best ways to positively communicate the message of liberty. Each section makes you think and consider what you would say. All compiled in an enjoyable and easily read format. Highly recommended.

Tired of RPG/400, JCL and the like? Here's a ticket out

If you're seeking a book that will prepare you for a career as a web developer, this isn't what you're looking for. It's neither a programming tutorial nor a book on specific environments, such as .NET. However, if you're doing maintenance programming in, say, RPG/400 or writing JCL and are wondering how you can refactor your skills and get out of the mid-range and mainframe environment this book is ideal.
Solid programming skills are assumed (preferably in C or C++, but that isn't essential). You should have a basic understanding of databases and data structures. If you have these skills this book will systematically familiarize you with the web programming environment and common tools and programming languages that you'll need to master in order to transition out of the data center. I like the way the book touches all of the key knowledge areas, starting with HTML and going through javascript, perl and the usual cast of mark-up, scripting and programming languages. More importantly, this book doesn't skim the surface - it does into databases, XML and server-side development. If you've read the table of contents and are tempted to question why CGI was included in such a relatively new book, bear in mind that most of the information in this book is ideal for maintenance programmers, and there are literally thousands of systems that still employ CGI scripts. This also reinforces my opinion about who will benefit most from this book - maintenance programmers from mid-range and mainframe environments.
In a nutshell, you bring your knowledge of algorithms, data structures and development methodologies, and the book will show you how to apply them to web programming.

This book is fascinating. For the builder, very helpful, with interesting information about the builders themselves. I've heard Classical guitar builders consider this to be the best work on the subject. Certainly the best I've found. Great book!

If you're serious about building great classical guitars, buy this book FIRST!

Chris here, rookie builder. but not a beginner to guitar building, having build solid electrics for many years now.
I just read this book.
I've planned to make the switch from electric to classical for many months now, and part of the research I've done is to buy every book I can about building classical guitars. So yes, I own all of them. every single one. I have even ordered Jose Romanillos's own construction book, self-published, from Spain. And I even own a copy of the book that he allegedly used to teach himself, way back in the 50's.
Making Master Guitars is the 22nd CG construction title that I bought and have read.
It probably won't be the last book I'll ever buy on the subject, but here's what I have to say about it, in a nutshell:
Buy this book first, if you're thinking about building better classical guitars.
I know it's expensive, but to quite another leading luthier, it's worth every penny.

In my view this would be one of the important texts for an aspiring builder of classical guitars. The forward portion of the book focusses on the most famous builders. With the rough designs presented it becomes simple to compare how each builder "puts it all together." Which of course, is both beguiling and instructive: beguiling due to the diversity and variance in approaches (for example, the solera, a fundamental tool in building, differs in style between Bagonovich, Cumpiano and this Courtnall text; however it is instructional because those techniques chosen seem logical and coherent. A practiced luthier may take the book and build these guitars, a beginner might look more toward a clearer appraoch to one single insturment. Either way, if you love the classical guitar you will want to have and appreciate this text. I think now is the time for someone like Courtnall to include the more admired of today's contemporary guitars as he leaves off with the 1966 Ramirez (50 years have passed). It would be interesting to see how things have/are changing in the guitar makers studio as well -- how newer technologies influence the builder and the quality or tenor of the instrument (e.g., latticed bracing, replacements for Brazilian Rosewood, tuners, todays builders, today's tools -- I just received my LMI catalog -- tell me whether it is worth spending $700.00 on a side bender when a $15.00 pipe and torch accomplishes the same thing -- the answers to these types of questions would be interesting for a novice builder like myself). I highly recommend the book, however, it's the best I have seen on the history of the great guitars.

About the Author

Matthew O. Ward was a professor in the Department of Computer Science at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Dr. Ward’s research focused on computer graphics, animation, image processing, computer vision, and data and information visualization.

Georges Grinstein is a professor in the Department of Computer Science and director of both the Institute for Visualization and Perception Research and the Center for Biomolecular and Medical Informatics at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Dr. Grinstein’s research encompasses visual analytics, human computing, perceptual computing, information computing, and visualization systems engineering.

Daniel Keim is a professor in the Department of Computer and Information Science and head of the Data Analysis and Visualization group at the University of Konstanz. Dr. Keim’s research interests include databases, data mining, information visualization, and visual analytics.

The fundamental resemblance between Derrida and such analytic thinkers as Quine, Wittgenstein, and Davidson, the author argues, is that they deny the possibility of meanings as self-interpreting media constituting thoughts and intentions. Derrida argues that some form of magic language has determined the very project of philosophy, and his arguments work out the consequences of denying that there are such self-interpreting mental contents. In addition, Derrida and Davidson agree in denying any “given.” Without a given, questions about realism and idealism cease to have a point. Derrida and Davidson are both committed to the textuality of all significant marks, whether in neurons or on paper. They argue that there is no mode of representation more direct than language.

This is a reprint of a book originally published in 1903 by Clark Wissler. The ceremonies of the Blackfoot of northern Montana and southern Alberta differ from those of the Lakota. It is said that the Lakota ceremonies have been compromised since they have been so readily studied since the fame of Black Elk Speaks. Not as much is known of the Blackfoot and this book offers a glimpse into their ceremony of the Sun Dance. This is not just a view of the past, but also a window into today as the Sun Dance of the Blackfoot continues to be held annually. Actually, writing this review is troubling as I don't want to see these ceremonies misappropriated the way those of the Lakota have been. However, this is a factual look that those wanting to begin to understand these proud people should begin to appreciate. It is only a brief opening of a window to knowledge. Look through it and begin to learn.

Blackfoot Culture Detailed

This is a great book for those who crave much more than the superficial treatment that most books give the Blackfoot culture. Very detailed and perhaps a bit more suited for the scholar than the casual reader. The sun dance is painstakingly explained with virtually every detail. I loved it!
