About the Author
Michel Dubois is a Professor in the Ming Hsieh Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Southern California (USC) and part of the Computer Engineering Directorate. Before joining USC in 1984, he was a research engineer at the Central Research Laboratory of Thomson-CSF in Orsay, France. He has published more than 150 technical papers on computer architecture and edited two books. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and of the ACM.

Murali Annavaram is an Assistant Professor and Robert G. and Mary G. Lane Early Career Chair in the Ming Hsieh Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Southern California, and part of the Computer Engineering Directorate, where he has developed and taught advanced computer architecture courses. Prior to USC, he spent six years at Intel researching various aspects of future CMP designs.

Per Stenstr�m is a Professor of Computer Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden. He has published two textbooks and over 100 technical papers. He has been a visiting scientist at Carnegie-Mellon University, Stanford University and the University of Southern California, and also was engaged in research at Sun Microsystems on its chip-multithreading technology. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and of the ACM and is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences and the Academia Europaea.

Best computer architecture book out there!

This book puts Patterson/Hennessy's book to shame! (Comp Arch: A Quantitative Approach)

For the most part this book covers everything CA:QA covers while at the same time being much more concrete. Although written by three authors, the book is very well written, greatly organized, sentences are clear and to the point, and most importantly, it does not pointlessly repeat information or put off key topics to the Appendices.

I love the fact that this book covers important information other comp. architecture don't (eg. Gustafson's law, difference between Vector and Array (systolic) processors, CMOS transistor-level basics, message-passing, interconnect basics, routing techniques, programming models). Even more gratifying is the fact that they spend a whole chapter describing the taxonomy of simulators! Every single commercial/academia processor out there is co-designed with the help of simulators nowadays. To me its just mind-boggling that other computer architecture books don't cover this essential topic.

Like any other computer architecture book out there, this book will NOT make you an expert in computer architecture. However, this book does exactly what it is supposed to do, and that is to give you a concise, complete review of what computer architecture is all about.

Having said, I would argue Computer Organization and Design (Hennessy) is a better book for beginners or people that need to review the basics. On the other hand, if you are looking to become more of an expert in any of the subfields within computer architecture I would recommend "Readings in Computer Architecture" by Hill/Jouppi/Sohi. Although not necessary up-to-date, the papers included in that book are classics and definitely must-read. Another great book is "Introduction to High Performance Computing for Scientists and Engineers" by Hager/Wellein.

Note: One drawback to be aware off is that this book doesn't cover Vector/GPU architecture as much in detail as CA:QA. However, in my opinion you would be better off just reading particular research papers on these topics.

Very up to date

When I studied parallel computing hardware as a grad student 20+ years ago it was a much simpler field. This turned out to be a perfect book for becoming acquainted with modern design principles and practice. I had a particular need to understand how we can better support database concurrent updates at a hardware level and I got a few nice ideas from the book, in my view way more than the price of admission.

Excellent computer architecture textbook

The field of computer architecture and microprocessor design has undergone a significant change in the past decade. The three best books about computer architecture that I know of are:

Computer Architecture, Fifth Edition: A Quantitative Approach
Modern Processor Design: Fundamentals of Superscalar Processors
Parallel Computer Organization and Design (this book)

Of these three books, Parallel Computer Organization and Design has the best coverage of the issues that have limited the increase in single core performance, as well as important constraints in the development of multicore processors.

Despite the title, this book covers all the important elements associated with the design of modern high performance CPUs, not just parallel computers.

The first four chapters focus on topics that don't directly deal with parallelism, but matter more for the design of the components in a CPU. These chapters help motivate the demand for parallel computers by highlighting limitations of scalar architectures, but they also give a good overview of fundamental concepts for the design of a CPU core. Chapters 5 through 8 focus on topics related to designing a parallel system, while chapter 9 provides a survey of simulation techniques used in the development of modern CPUs.

The book is organized in a logical fashion and it is instructive to read it from cover to cover. However, each chapter also provides standalone coverage of a specific topic and can be read individually. The chapters are also comprehensive and the book does not assume that the reader has an extensive background in computer architecture. I think it would be useful as a textbook for someone in a computer architecture course, or simply as a good reference on modern CPU design.

My primary complaint with the book is the lack of references. There are none. While the authors clearly drew on a vast amount of personal knowledge, mistakes or omissions are inevitable when covering so much material. For instance, I noticed that the explanation of the SMARTS sampling technique on pages 512-513 was not completely correct. This made me somewhat less confident about other topics explained in the book that I don't have as much expertise in. Having references would have added to the credibility of the book.

Another failing is that the book does not differentiate clearly between topics that are implemented in commercially available CPUs and ones that currently only exist as research proposals. This was most notable in the explanation of thread-level speculation in section 8.5.4. Also, Chapter 9 did not differentiate between simulation techniques used primarily in academic research and those used for development of real CPUs.

Overall, however, I found the book to be a clear and comprehensive survey of the most important topics related to the design of modern CPUs, and I highly recommend it for anyone wanting to learn and understand the details of how modern CPUs work.

About the Author
Drs. C. Alexander and Annellen Simpkins live in San Diego and are both psychologists who have specialized in studies of the mind. They have devoted many years to the study of hypnosis and have taught meditation skills to people of all ages. They have also spent the past 25 years involved in the martial arts as practitioners, instructors, and writers. Their work in meditation spans their two worlds of professional interest: martial arts and psychology, adding a unique and comprehensive perspective to this book. Less a practical guide than a history of Taosim.

If you already know the history of Taoism and are looking for a more practical, modern guide, this probably isn't the right book. This book takes a much more traditional view of Taoism, teaching the reader about t'ai ch'i and other activities. Presenting Taoism more as a faith than a philosophy, it's just not what I was looking for in a more practical guide to living with balance in one's life.

Good Introduction to Taoism

The book is organized into three parts: 1. History of Taoism, 2. Definition of Taoist Concepts, and 3. Taoism in Practice.

The second section is easily the best, most objective and least analytic. The authors define Tao, Te, wu-wei, ying and yang, p'u and chi. Taoism *is* "simple"; it isn't easy to practice, but far too many authors tend to analyze and over-analyze while defining, which is the precise antithesis of Tao. The second section of this book takes a solid Taoist approach by simply defining the terms; you use them your Way.

The third section, Taoist Practice, represents the authors' mindset. It is how they practice Taoism -- they write about some Taoist arts but not others and don't mention that this was their writing approach. Likewise for The first section, Taoist History. It reads as well-researched but speaks only of certain elements.

The problematic part is that book is written as though all concepts presented are in equal measure the essence of--and necessary to--Taoism, with no mention of elements left out. I bought this for a friend who was interested in the basics of Taoism, and I picked it up to see what I'd be giving him. I ended up reading it; it's very short and fast and I liked it a lot. I thought highly of it. Then when I gave it to him I found that I wanted to explain which elements could be appropriate or not for him, or what he doesn't need to take as "fact" of Taoism as it's presented here.

I've considered Taoism indespensible in my life for over a decade and while this book is quite a good introduction, it has a somewhat one-sided view that's presented as universal, which makes this a good primer course but requires supplemental information. It's unfortunate because the material is good -- if only they would have written that the third chapter, for example, is about the ways *they* practice: e.g., martial art is one of the Toaist arts, much detail is given to it while other Taoist arts go unmentioned. As a first book about Taoism it might be difficult to differentiate between their thoughts and others'.

Overall: Good book. The 2nd section section is worth the price of admission, easily, for its simple definitions of typically over-described concepts. But parts one and three should be taken as the less objective of the three sections.

I detest writing negative reviews. ;-(

This book attempts to do three things and fails all three miserably.
Tries to teach Qigong with only three exercizes. (In my opinion; the authors should have taught Ba Duan Jin (Eight peices of brocade).) This would stimulate all 12 of the primary meridians. and improve your physical and psychological health.
Tries to convey the essence of the Taoist faith. (very limited in scope)
Teaches breathing exercizes, (especially a breathing pattern where you draw in the stomach on the inhale (this is called reverse taoist breathing, and builds Qi in your body very quickly)). This can be dangerous if you do not know how to release the surcharge of Qi, and no; the authors do not warn of this problem, nor teach how to release the energy safely.
Please see my Taoist listmania list for recommended titles and allow this volume to collect dust; because it is dangerous to your physical and psychological health.

About the Author
Holly Stiel is a trailblazing service philosopher who innovated a method of training based on the practices and principles of the world-class concierge. Her clients include: Disney, Nordstrom, AVEDA, American Express, Auberge Resorts, Singapore Airlines, Hilton and Hyatt hotels. Excellent book. Reinforced many of the ways I approach being a Concierge. I'm self trained so it was good to see I was doing things correctly. Also picked up some good ideas. Loved the anecdotes. I also use many of the ideas and values expressed in the book in training new Concierges. Well worth reading for anyone who works as a Concierge or even any customer service position.

This book differs from the usual guides, as it describes the historical evolution, from the Old Kingdom to the Late Period, of the tombs and temples of Thebes (modern Luxor). The authors provide detailed and accurate information about life in the city. Subjects covered include the Valley of the Kings, that of the Queens and of the Nobles. Issues such as tomb decoration and burials of private individuals are addressed. This is an excellent, recommended, must-read book for all.

About the Author

Gloria J. Browne-Marshall is an assistant professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice (City University of New York), where she teaches courses in constitutional law, evidence, and race and the law. A former civil rights litigator, Professor Browne-Marshall has published several articles on criminal justice, civil rights, and international human rights issues. She holds an M.A. from the University of Pennsylvania and a J.D. from St. Louis University School of Law.

GREAT Professor

Prof. Marshall is an AWESOME professor and very knowledgeable. She knows her stuff and inspires her students to engage
in making a difference and get involved in current issues. If you are not sure of what you want to do with your education she
will assist you in exploring and figuring out how to excel, and will definitely inspire you to succeed. I can appreciate a professor
who really cares about the students and making sure they get the most out of their education. Her favorite saying is, "take advantage of everything
that the world has to offer". I would recommend all John Jay students to take her 400 level class, especially if you are looking
to go to law school and become a lawyer!! Prof. Marshall is the BEST!!!

Statistics for the Life Sciences is an introductory text in statistics, specifically addressed to students specializing in the life sciences. Its primary aims are (1) to show students how statistical reasoning is used in biological, medical, and agricultural research; (2) to enable students confidently to carry out simple statistical analyses and to interpret the results; and (3) to raise students' awareness of basic statistical issues such as randomization, confounding, and the role of independent replication.

Style and Approach

The style of Statistics for the Life Sciences is informal and uses only minimal mathematical notation. There are no prerequisites except elementary algebra; anyone who can read a biology or chemistry textbook can read this text. It is suitable for use by graduate or undergraduate students in biology, agronomy, medical and health sciences, nutrition, pharmacy, animal science, physical education, forestry, and other life sciences.

Use of Real Data. Real examples are more interesting and often more enlightening than artificial ones. Statistics for the Life Sciences includes hundreds of examples and exercises that use real data, representing a wide variety of research in the life sciences. Each example has been chosen to illustrate a particular statistical issue. The exercises have been designed to reduce computational effort and focus students' attention on concepts and interpretations.

Emphasis on Ideas. The text emphasizes statistical ideas rather than computations or mathematical formulations. Probability theory is included only to support statistics concepts. Throughout the discussion of descriptive and inferential statistics, interpretation is stressed. By means of salient examples, the student is shown why it is important that an analysis be appropriate for the research question to be answered, for the statistical design of the study, and for the nature of the underlying distributions. The student is warned against the common blunder of confusing statistical nonsignificance with practical insignificance, and is encouraged to use confidence intervals to assess the magnitude of an effect. The student is led to recognize the impact on real research of design concepts such as random sampling, randomization, efficiency, and the control of extraneous variation by blocking or adjustment. Numerous exercises amplify and reinforce the student's grasp of these ideas.

The Role of the Computer/ The analysis of research data is usually carried out with the aid of a computer. Computer-generated graphs and output, either from the statistical software DataDesk or MINITAB, are shown at several places in the text. MINITAB commands are given in a number of places (although MINITAB output can also be generated from menus while running the software). However, in studying statistics it is desirable for the student to gain experience working directly with data, using paper and pencil and a hand-held calculator, as well as a computer. This experience will help the student appreciate the nature and purpose of the statistical computations. The student is thus prepared to make intelligent use of the computer—to give it appropriate instructions and properly interpret the output. Accordingly, most of the exercises in this text are intended for hand calculation. Selected exercises, identified with the words "computer exercise" are intended to be completed with use of a computer. (Typically, the computer exercises require calculations that would be unduly burdensome if carried out by hand.)

Organization

This text is organized to permit coverage in one semester of the maximum number of important statistical ideas, including power, multiple inference, and the basic principles of design. By including or excluding optional sections, the instructor can also use the text for a one-quarter course or a two-quarter course. It is suitable for a terminal course or for the first course of a sequence.

The following is a brief outline of the text:

Chapter 1: Introduction. The nature and impact of variability in biological data.

Chapter 2: Orientation. Frequency distributions, descriptive statistics, the concept of population versus sample.

Chapters 3, 4, and 5: Theoretical preparation. Probability, binomial and normal distributions, sampling distributions.

Chapter 6: Confidence interval for a mean or for a proportion.

Chapter 7: Comparison of two independent samples. The t-test and the Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney test.

Chapter 8: Design. Randomization, blocking, hazards of observational studies.

Chapter 9: Inference for paired samples. Confidence interval, t-test, sign test, and Wilcoxon signed-rank test.

Chapter 10: Categorical data. Chi-square goodness-of-fit test, conditional probability, contingency tables. Optional sections cover Fisher's exact test, McNemar's test, and odds ratios.

Chapter 11: Analysis of variance: one-way layout. Multiple comparison procedures, two-way analysis of variance, contrasts, and interaction in two-factor designs are included in optional sections.

Chapter 12: Regression and correlation. Descriptive and inferential aspects of simple linear regression and correlation and the relationship between them.

Chapter 13: A summary of inference methods.

Statistical tables are provided at the back of the book. The tables of critical values are especially easy to use, because they follow mutually consistent layouts and so are used in essentially the same way.

Optional appendices at the back of the book give the interested student a deeper look into such matters as how the Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney null distribution is calculated.

definitely oversimplified.

I took an AP statistics course in high school that went into much better detail than this book ever did. With this book I could not have made it out with the understanding I currently have of statistics without having taken that class years ago. Our instructor was pretty much incompetent, so it was a true test of how well the textbook got the job done. I watched my classmates really struggle with this book. The problem is that the concepts of different test statistics and what they actually mean are too oversimplified. The book does a great job of teaching how through an extensive amount of examples, but not why, and not enough instances or explanations of what should be done when problems deviate from the given example. It is really important in statistics to know how to handle different kinds of data and which tests to apply to them, but the book in my opinion did a poor job of distinguishing and explaining the different types of tests, as well as how the results should be analyzed. I would definitely recommend looking elsewhere for a good statistics textbook. When it comes to mathematics, theory (knowing why a problem is solved the way it is and why it works) is just as important as being able to correctly solve the problem.

Book better than class.

This textbook was required for my statistics class at the University of Wisconsin. I found the book easier to follow with better examples than my lecture was. Often I cannot learn anything right from the book, but this book made it easy with complete examples and simple descriptions of variables and theory. The book was so good, in fact, I rarely made it to class because I learned it better from the book!

Oversimplified

The book is reasonably good at explaining simple concepts.

However, the lack of detail does not allow for real life application in a biological field: the concepts are oversimplified and the examples given do not reflect the difficulty of actual basic statistics work in the life sciences.

If you want to buy this book, the questions you should ask yourself are:
