About the Author
Wilfred Thesiger was born in 1910 in Ethiopia. From 1930 Thesiger travelled through remote areas of Africa, the Middle East and Asia. His journeys and his books have won him numerous prestigious awards over the years. In 1968 he was made a CBE, he was honoured with a KBE in 1995.

A key to understanding the Arab world

Besides being a wonderful book, as other reviewers have remarked, 'Arabian Sands' is important reading for anyone who wants to understand the culture and history of the Arab countries of the Middle East and North Africa.
The Bedu are, and always have been, a small fraction of the Arabs; historically, they have been disliked, mistrusted and often hated by the settled Arabs of the Middle East. In North Africa, the Berbers (a completely different people, with non-Arabic languages) have sometimes been confused with the Bedu. The Bedu way of life is now nearly extinct; Thesiger's book, which describes his travels with the Yamani Bedu of Southern Arabia, is the only careful account of Bedu culture and Bedu peoples I have ever come across. I know of no similarly illuminating study of the Qaysi Bedu of Northern Arabia, not even the works of T. E. Lawrence.
The historical importance of the Bedu in the Arab world is that on several occasions from the 8th century to the 20th century, Bedu tribesmen formed the core of armies that swept across the Middle East and/or North Africa. Invading Bedu armies overthrew decadent regimes in North Africa in the 13th century, and effectively destroyed Berber power on the North African coast. Bedu formed the core of the Arab armies that defeated the Turks in the First World War, and were the core of the army which Ibn Saud created that turned him from being a refugee into being the founder of Saudi Arabia as it is today. How did the small number of people who comprised the various Bedu tribes exercise such military power throughout the Arab World? Read "Arabian Sands" to understand this.

One of my idols

I read this book when I was much younger and no one knew about this man nor much about Arabia. I was invited to be part of a team that would start an airline for the United Arab Emirates, a rather new country (formally the Trucial Coast- tribes that warred against each other and were Bedu and pearl divers). The airline was called Hamarein Air in about 1976 and was started by one little Bedu named Saif Hamarein. He owned small mini marts all over the Emirates, but especially in Ras al Khaima and Sharjah. he raised money from those to buy a 747!
I read this book as I started departing from LAX and since the flight was over 27 hours with a stop in Paris and an over night, I finished it.
This man, Sir Wilfred Thesiger was remarkable and although only 29 years old, struck off into uncharted lands even the Bedu did not dare cross. He traveled and lived among the tribes of all the areas he charted and learned amazing things from the nations. Because of him today, we learned much about a peoples unknown to the western world. I often wondered what happened to him and since we did not have computers, there was little way to actually look for him. He seemed to have vanished. But on my second time living among the Emirates in the 1990's, they found him in a mud hut in Africa being cared for by an Ethiopian woman and he had satchels of film never processed from his trips in the 1940's! I own 2 of these unpublished photos of his journeys and had the amazing pleasure of meeting my idol at 90+ years old! I cherish my photo with him. He was a remarkable man who did much to bring us the very news about corners of the earth he was later to regret as it brought westernization to the quiet countries and people he adored.

"Lawrence of Arabia" just scratched the surface

We know from LAWRENCE OF ARABIA and other sources that the "Empty Quarter" desert of Saudi Arabia can kill the unprepared or unwary. But there was much more to negotiating this vast and varied tract of sand and other obstacles than the movie would have had us believe. The product of a British colonial upbringing and a relentless explorer, Sir Wilfrid Thesiger tracked these sands, many of them heretofore untracked, with the help of a handful of scouts and some survival skills. His prose, while deliberately plain, is unmatched in its common sense, narrative drive, and sense of the relentlessness of a desert transit. This is probably Sir Wilfred's best-known book, but I'd also like to recommend The Marsh Arabs (Penguin Classics), a journal he published some years later about negotiating the Iraqi swamps and wetlands, and interacting with the unusual Arabs who depended on boats, fishing and reeding for sustenance, before Sadam Hussein drained most of the waterways in the 1980s.

Boilerplate and expensive.

More of the same pain mangement stuff that is boilerplate as it is boring and uninspiring. You can find cheaper books on pain management of the same caliber. If youre a simpleton who is incapable of critical thought-then this book is for you. The authors offer their opinion in a dogmatic fashion- typical of doctors who have an uncritical committment to their profession. No wonder pain care in America isn't evolving for books like this one assume a simple and reductionistic approach to pain care. The authors make no note of the reproducibility crises- so the facts they refer to are quite questionable- as their is suppressed evidence in pain care due to publication bias.

If you want to understand modern propaganda, start here

This book is a must read for anyone who wants to understand how influence campaigns are conducted (and perhaps not so well) by the British and UK governments. While this is an academic work, Emma shines light on a field that is not often understood or even seen. This may not be a quick or easy read, but Emma has poured considerable research and effort into this opus - and her writing style overcomes the constraints of academia.

Technical Guide to building winged or multirotor R/C Craft

First - this is NOT a book for beginners or those just entering this field or hobby who don't have technical experience. The author makes that clear in the description, but many of the other reviews seem to indicate it's a "starter" book.
It is quite technical and meant to educate the technically literate hobbyist who want to break out their soldering iron, order parts, understand antennas, radio frequencies, etc. and perhaps build a semi-custom multirotor or winged aircraft.
With that in mind, readers should check out the sample (click the book cover here) and the table of contents to see if the subjects addressed fit their needs.

Alice Goffman spent six years in one Philadelphia neighborhood, documenting the routine stops, searches, raids, and beatings that young men navigate as they come of age. In the course of her research, she became roommates with Mike and Chuck, two friends trying to make ends meet between low wage jobs and the drug trade. Like many in the neighborhood, Mike and Chuck were caught up in a cycle of court cases, probation sentences, and low level warrants, with no clear way out. We observe their girlfriends and mothers enduring raids and interrogations, "clean" residents struggling to go to school and work every day as the cops chase down neighbors in the streets, and others eking out a living by providing clean urine, fake documents, and off the books medical care. This fugitive world is the hidden counterpoint to mass incarceration, the grim underside of our nation's social experiment in punishing Black men and their families. While recognizing the drug trade's damage, On The Run reveals a justice system gone awry: it is an exemplary work of scholarship highlighting the failures of the War on Crime, and a compassionate chronicle of the families caught in the midst of it.

this book is not really about Indian music....

This book sucks on so many levels but mainly because at its heart it's not truly about Indian music. The author makes observations about the music as an outsider which incidentally he probably could have made about 80s hair metal. I bought this book to supplement my knowledge of Hindusthasni music as a sitarist for almost 20 years. Rhythm has always been my weakness and I'm always looking for different ways of wrapping my head around it and also for new patterns to practice. I read half of this book before giving up and not once was there any discussion about any of the rhythmic patterns used in Indian music by the tabla player or instrumentalist. All discussion remains at the surface level of the music couched in academic double-speak. This is quite literally the first book I have purchased in ages where I want my money back.

This book is an in-depth academic analysis of meter in North Indian music. Based on the author's doctoral research, the book includes theoretical perspectives, types and uses of tal, rhythm and meter in performance, and cross-culture perspectives. Clayton crafts his descriptions of meter and rhythm carefully so that they are general enough to cover all genres of North Indian music. As a result of this generality, much of the analysis can be applied to South Indian music as well. He points out that meter in North Indian music is hard to reconcile with "universal metrical" theory, such as that proposed by Lerdahl and Jackendoff, and he argues that any universal theory of meter must take into account North Indian music. Much of the book is highly technical and may only be accessible to specialists in music theory. Nevertheless, novices who are interested in Indian music will still find much of interest, as Clayton explains such topics as the sequence of events in an Indian classical concert, and the cyclic nature of Indian rhythms quite clearly. The accompanying CD contains clips that demonstrate many of the rhythms and meters discussed in the text.

Comparing Iranian Rhythm and Indian Rhythm

It was 2002 that I first read the Clayton's book on Indian Rhythm. It was fascinating but I could not closely touch the rhythmic arrangements in that part of the world. Once I was introduced to a book by an Iranian scholar called Mohammad R Azadehfar on Persian rhythm entitled Rhythmic Structure in Iranian Music. The book accompanied by more than 100 audio tracks of Iranian music analyzed in the book. I had a chance of putting both books side by side and understood both books better. I recommend readers to take a comparative study on the concept of rhythm in Iran and India in order to get a full picture of musical structure in that part of the world.Rhythmic structure in Iranian music (2nd Edition)

Great little book with a very timely and ageless message

This is a great little book with lots of reenforcement for positive thinkers. Many of the articles are real-life examples that demonstrate the importance and value of maintaining a positive attitude. I purchased additional copies and passed them along to family members. Everyone has loved the book. Given these difficult times and all the bad news, I use mine as a source for a daily dose of positive thinking.

Not much use

I read this book with a specific purpose, and it failed to deliver. I had perused a sample before buying, and had reservations but still proceeded with the purchase as the price is quite cheap. Not a good use of time and money as far as I am concerned, mainly for 3 reasons.
First, contrary to what the title suggests, the method proposed here is directly based on the age-old "loci" system ("memory palace"), without any significant adaptation tailored to Arabic.
Second, the book contains no decent analysis - like the number of words you should target, or the consequence of the 3-letter root system and derivation. I discovered somewhere in the middle of the book that the author knows probably about as many words as me. He has 28 "memory palaces", and states his largest have more than 100 words. So I'd bet his vocabulary is in the 1500-2000 range, like mine. I am struggling to double it, as proficiency typically means more than 3000 words, in most languages.
Third and most puzzling to me, the method proposes to learn words in alphabetic order of the target language. After studying half a dozen languages including English as a foreign language, I am yet to see any student achieve even a basic conversation level that way. Many sources document the value of learning "production" (from your native language to your target language), rather than "recognition" - especially with the alphabetic order.
The loci system and other technics such as mental images are fantastic. However you can find other references explaining them better and in a nicer prose. Hence the rating of 1 star.

A good read for anyone interested learning, langauge learning, and arabic learning.

Anthony Metriever gives us a clear plan, that is easy to understand and easy to follow for how to take us from knowing no Arabic and nothing about learning techniques or mnemonics to learn enough vocabulary to speak fluently.

The plan includes mind hacks like memory palace (Which is described in a way that someone who has never heard of it before could understand it) which is famous from for example Sherlock Holmes and The Mentalist to learn vocabulary without boring and ineffective rote learning, and some simple advice for relaxing.

It was an engaging read, and I'd definately recommend it to any friend who's interested in langauge learning, or specifically, Arabic learning.

I regret spending actual money on this 'book'. Writer obviously have no idea about arabic, he has no idea how to use it, or even how to pronounce letters ('it sounds to me like...'). He used half of the space to promote himself. I feel sad when I think that he makes money on selling unscientific persona-marketing without even knowing what is the topic of his own book. It just hurts real people of language studies. And he has a temper to push everywhere fake-looking positive opinions.

I rate it 'S' for SCUM.

Rather, Shield explains how conditions in the nursing home create a difficult and uncomfortable "liminality"―the transition from an accustomed role to a new one-for the residents. In characterizing nursing-home existence, she goes beyond Erving Goffman's classic definition of the "total institution" to show how residents pass from adulthood to death without the comfort of ritual or community support common in rites of passage. In addition to the isolation created by this solitary passage, she finds restrictions on "reciprocity"―the old people are always recipients whose need and obligation to repay are seen as unnecessary and difficult to satisfy. The system encourages their passivity, which deepens their dependency and helps to explain why they are often perceived as children. Offering concrete suggestions for improving the quality of nursing-home life, Uneasy Endings will find a broad audience among those who work with the aged.

Entering a nursing home can be seen as a rite of passage between adulthood and death. It is a rite which, in our society, is often gloomy, lonely, and dehumanizing. Cultural anthropologist Shields observed daily life in a home, located in a Northeastern city, whose primarily Jewish residents are ". . . cared for, nourished, protected, kept from harm and, until the end, from death." More scholarly and somewhat more objective than David Oliver and Sally Tureman's The Human Factor in Nursing Home Care (Haworth, 1988), this book combines interviews with residents and staff and the author's field notes along with analysis of her observations. Jaber Gubrium's Living & Dying at Murray Manor (St. Martin's, 1975) remains the classic study of this genre.
