About the Author

Douglas Self studied engineering at Cambridge University, then psychoacoustics at Sussex University. He has spent many years working at the top level of design in both the professional audio and hifi industries, and has taken out a number of patents in the field of audio technology. He currently acts as a consultant engineer in the field of audio design.

An excellent way to get an education in audio electronics

This is the second edition of Small Signal Design. It's a fascinating book if you are interested in electronic design in the audio field. Mr. Self has included very through explanations of transistor and op amp circuits related to small signal audio design. He explains how circuits work and which characteristics of circuits are important. He builds many of the circuits to prove out theory and his simulations. He then explains the use of these circuits in various pieces of electronic equipment.

This latest edition has a lot more material on design of circuitry that interfaces with for example; phone cartridges. I'm not interested in designing such circuitry, but I still found those sections very interesting and worthwhile, because they added to my overall knowledge of design. This latest edition must be at least 100 pages longer than the first edition, which I also own, and the added pages are very valuable.

I use the knowledge I have gained from Mr. Self's books to better understand audio equipment and to help decide which equipment is well designed. These aren't easy subjects and a couple of readings of the books are required; but, I've found that after reading this book and Mr. Self's book on power amplifiers, I can often look pictures of circuits boards from various pieces of equipment, or the circuit boards themselves, and have an excellent idea of their actual circuitry. I can reference datasheets from say op amps, and tell which ones have better specifications for a particular application. That means Mr. Self is doing a great job of educating me; with some work on my part!

If you enjoy the technical part of audio, especially electronics, this a wonderful book. I also enjoy Mr. Self's humor which makes the material much more interesting.

Like all of Douglas Self's books, a model of clarity. Good explanations, good pictures, good measurements and simulations that well illustrate the principles. In addition, his light tone and occasional bits of humor make reading it quite pleasant.

Be carefull!
When you click from the paper book page on "get the kindle version" its randomly direct you to one of the ten ebook corresponding to the ten chapter of the CBK, not the full version. Since the title are very long the end of the title does'nt display and you think you ll get the full book.

These books are a wealth of computer security knowledge, however, I found the poor editing to be distracting at times. The Kindle version was created with no thought to the size of the screen that was being used, and how poorly some of the images would show up.

The text in of the book was also poorly edited. Did nobody proof these books?

" This book is so full of useful information, including how to prevent things going wrong

This is the book I've been wanting. I have a number of books on preserving foods, including the "Bible" of preserving, "The Art of Fermentation." This book is so full of useful information, including how to prevent things going wrong, how much of what you need (as opposed to Sandor Katz's saying, "these days I just throw it in." (NOT useful.) In any case, Shockey's book is a pleasure to read, easy to use, has wonderful photos and illustrations, and ideas for preserving that are new to me. On top of all that, it is fun to read. What more do you want? Buy this book.

A-Z compendium of veggie fermentations

Great resource - am an 'experienced' fermenter but this book would work for beginners as well. it is a nice A-Z compendium of how to ferment (and when not to ferment) your fave veggies. I use a slightly different method to prevent mold, and i use a water lock but the recipes are well thought-out and solid. especially helpful is the 'scum' identifier section at the back of the book. and yes, there are pictures sprinkled throughout- a must for me, a visual cook.

An Inspirational Kick Start!

I'm not exactly new to fermenting, but I was stuck - doing the same, comfortable fermentations - until I got this book. It is so easy to understand, so simple to find a recipe for whatever veggie you are currently harvesting, and so inspirational in the combinations of spices and veggies that I found myself immediately looking for more crocks! I got started right away with the Thai-inspired Baby Pak Choi recipe and after finding some giant beets hiding under the cucumber leaves, the Curried Golden Beets. All so yummy!

I can see spending the entire next harvest season experimenting my way through the recipes, and then enjoying one of the cocktails at the end of the day. A great book and refreshing addition to my fermentation library!

Learn monitoring with a hands-on approach

If you want to learn how to do monitoring the right way, get this book. If you don't know anything about monitoring and you want a hands-on approach, get this book. If you want to set up a real production monitoring system using Riemann you'll learn a lot here. In fact, even if you don't choose to use the tools that the author uses, you'll still learn a lot. Did I say get the book?

Great book to learn a different methodology of monitoring your system, nuts and bolts book.

This book is a beginners how to with many examples using open source tools to learn how to develop your own set of monitoring tools. It is a bit slanted towards Linux and covering some Windows however if you want to continue following the pull approach it does to seem to address how that is done in windows.

Worth the read learning a new approach of how to monitor, the main tool selected is relatively new and may mature over time compared to push tools already with a significant head start worth watching and learning for sure.

I found the jump into Riemann in chapter 2 rather jarring and never quite recovered. Some of the concepts and observations in chapter 1 were actually quite good. My complaint is that the system proposed by the author will not stand the test of time. There is a solid effort to address optional software at the end of each chapter which is useful.

I suppose what I was looking for was not what this book set out to provide. I wanted a higher level treatment similar to chapter 1 but with more detail and analysis. I felt like I was continually being pulled down the Riemann path against my wishes. It's not that I have anything against Riemann. I like Kyle and have learned a ton from his blog. Riemann adoption is fairly low. The author's own 2014 survey failed to turn up many adopters:

The proposed monitoring infrastructure is also quite complex and difficult to setup and maintain. Graphite is unwieldy. Riemann, from my recollection, is difficult to setup and understand. Layer in ELK, syslog, statsd, collectd, and the like, and this is a huge undertaking.

Who has setup an environment like the one proposed in this book? I'd hazard a guess there are very few such infrastructures deployed today.

Overall, the author clearly knows a good deal about monitoring and has collected and presented good information about the leading open source projects out there. Where this book falls down is its failure to be more inclusive by treating the problem space at a slightly higher elevation.

About the Author
Widely read, widely anthologized, widely interviewed, and widely taught, Adrienne Rich (1929–2012) was for decades among the most influential writers of the feminist movement and one of the best-known American public intellectuals. She wrote two dozen volumes of poetry and more than a half-dozen of prose. Her constellation of honors includes a National Book Award for poetry for Tonight, No Poetry Will Serve, a MacArthur Foundation “genius” grant in 1994, and a National Book Award for poetry in 1974 for Diving Into the Wreck. That volume, published in 1973, is considered her masterwork. Ms. Rich’s other volumes of poetry include The Dream of a Common Language, A Wild Patience Has Taken Me This Far, An Atlas of the Difficult World, The School Among the Ruins, and Telephone Ringing in the Labyrinth. Her prose includes the essay collections On Lies, Secrets, and Silence; Blood, Bread, and Poetry; an influential essay, “Compulsory Heterosexuality and Lesbian Existence,” and the nonfiction book Of Woman Born, which examines the institution of motherhood as a socio-historic construct. In 2006, Rich was awarded the Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters by the National Book Foundation. In 2010, she was honored with The Griffin Trust for Excellence in Poetry's Lifetime Recognition Award.

Let's hear it for TRUTH!

Adrienne Rich is a thinker, and yeah, the reader who said this book was outdated is probably right about that. Thinking IS pretty outdated these days - as are truth and authenticity. Although this book is written from a feminist perspective, Rich's commentary on the destructive aspects of lies, secrets and silence applies to all of humanity.

more relevant today than ever

As I have educated myself in adulthood, first as an undergraduate, then in time, two MA degrees, one in theology, this book has named realities I see in women's lives with greater nuance than anyone else I read. Her prose and her poetry is very fine and insightful. The reader who gave it one star probably couldn't get his (?her) head around the references to what it's like to be a lesbian and double discriminated against--and hated by the dominant culture. I'm straight but not narrow. If we are going to progress as a species we need to be able to stretch our minds and hearts to understand the social location of the writer. That is why professors require books like this. Once your mind is stretched it never goes back to the tight little rubber band it once was. It can stretch around more books.

Rich's work remains thoughtful and provoking even now. The changing feminist consciousness revealed by her collected essays is a fascinating portrait of a growth over time. This book deserves far more than one star.

What if hell really existed? The premise of The Descent is just that. We first meet the protagonist of the story, Ike Crockett, as he guides a group of tourists on a Tibetan walkabout. Trapped on a mountain during a blizzard, Ike leads the group into a cave that just happens to be a gateway to hell. More hellish evidence soon emerges at sites as far-flung as Bosnia and the Kalahari Desert. Long, author of The Ascent (LJ 6/1/92), set on Mt. Everest, here chooses a subject that invites comparison to DanteAbut his style is more reminiscent of early Stephen King, when characters still mattered. While some sex appears in the story, violence is a greater concern, though it does further the plot. The story is complex, with some surprising twists near the end. All in all, this is one of those compelling books that is difficult to finish but even more difficult to put down. Recommended for larger suspense/horror collections.

Great Premise, but Suffers from Poor Writing

So a civilization of sorts has been discovered living in tunnels and caverns deep underground all over the world. Apparently an off-shoot of homo erectus that has existed for thousands of years unknown to us. Mankind, of course, either wants to study them (the scientists) or destroy them (the military and the capitalists) and take over the subterranean world.
The novel primarily focuses on an expedition of scientists and soldiers that look to cross under the Pacific Ocean and explore and possibly claim the territory of the barbaric and murderous Hadals (general term used to describe underground dwellers). Unfortunately, the author breaks up this storyline with an inferior aboveground subplot of a group looking to discover the identity of Satan. This back and forth between above and below kills the tension and goes on far too long as editing would have been hugely beneficial.
The author should have streamlined the book by sticking to the underground adventure and the havoc that ensues as man discovers he is not equipped to do battle against this alien and ancient population. As it is the novel seems bloated with too many characters and their stories and spread thin over too many places and too much time.

Explore the Depths of Humanity

I don't frequently read fiction books, but on a whim decided to read 'The Descent' because the description highly interested me. I'm a fan of scary movies, and a while back saw the movie 'The Descent' which I thought was somehow related to this book (not so).

I was extremely impressed by the writing quality in this book. I don't often get drawn into writing, but I was completely sucked into Jeff Long's world while reading this book.

The plotline (no spoilers, I promise) revolves around a recently discovered ancient civilization of human-like creatures that dwell deep within the inner earth. These ancient monster-like creatures live hidden beneath the ground (for the most part) in a hell-like world. They frequently kidnap and kill humans on the surface, and drag them back into their own hellish world.

Through the course of the novel, their civilization is discovered by modern society, and a global war is launched on the inner earth creatures. The rest of the book is about the travels and discoveries of a group of scientists and soldiers through the inner earth who are on an elaborate quest to map out the deepest level of this ancient civilization and learn as much as possible about the creates that live there.

If you're at all interested in dark stories and intense plot development, then you will definitely enjoy this book.

Give it a read, you won't regret it.

Requires suspension of disbelief

This novel is, on the first read, an excellent and entertaining wild ride. It isn't until you read it again that you start questioning the science, or the theology, or the anthropology, or the physics.

Humans discover that Satan and his minions really do exist, and they exist in a world deep within the Earth. Long gives wonderful hints as to the history of their existence - the skeleton of a Viking warrior in a long abandoned underground tunnel is one, and pays homage to Michael Crichton's "Eaters of the Dead".

The story begins with mountaineer Ike Crockett discovering that he, and the group of new agey tourists he's leading through the mountains of Tibet, are hopelessly lost. They take shelter in a cave as he and his girlfriend attempt to formulate a plan to get them back to civilization. While there, they discover a tattooed and scarred mummy propped against a shelf. The mummy has, among other things, verses from Shakespeare tattooed on him, so it's an intriguing puzzle that Ike wants to solve. As they explore the cave, Ike realizes that something is very wrong.

The section that deals with the world grasping the existence of these creatures and the methods used to investigate them (Mars rovers provide much of the early data) was the most interesting to me personally, because then, aside from the socioreligious topics of the novel, you are introduced to the age-old practice of Manifest Destiny, in which the corporations flood into the underworld after the military has wiped out the hadals.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, with the side tangents concerning the existence of a real Satan, the authenticity of the Turin Shroud, and the romance between a missionary nun and the iron-willed Ike, who has been pressed into service by a shady military/corporate Bad Guy for the reason that Ike surviced ten years of hadal captivity and lived to talk about it.

It's worth the read, and will get you prepared to read "Year Zero".

Since the Second Vatican Council (1962-5), the Catholic Church has formally declared the possibility of salvation for atheists: 'those who, without fault, have not yet arrived at an express recognition of God' (Lumen Gentium 16). However, in the very same document, the Council also reiterates the traditional doctrine of the necessity of faith, baptism, and the mediation of Church in order for someone to be saved (Lumen Gentium 14). This monograph explores how these two seemingly contradictory claims may satisfactorily be reconciled. Specifically, it asks - and ultimately answers - the question: How, within the parameters of Catholic dogmatic theology, is it possible for an atheist to be saved?

As the first full-length study of this topic since Vatican II, the book discusses crucial foundational issues - the understanding of 'atheist' in Catholic theology; the developing views on both unbelief, and the salvation of non-Christians, in the decades preceding the Council - before tackling the conciliar teaching itself. Considerable attention is then given to the classic solution of imputing an 'implicit' faith to righteous atheists, best known from Karl Rahner's theory of 'anonymous Christians' (though the basic idea was advocated by many other major figures, including Ratzinger, Schillebeeckx, de Lubac, Balthasar, and Kung). After discussing Rahner's specific proposals in detail, this kind of approach is however shown to be untenable. In its place, a new way of understanding Vatican II's optimism for atheists is developed in detail, in light of scripture, tradition, and magisterium. This draws principally on Christ's descent into Hell, a renewed understanding of invincible ignorance, and a literal interpretation of Matthew 25.

Outstanding exploration of Catholic theology in relation to the question of how atheists might be saved

Stephen Bullivant's monograph offers a welcome contribution to an area in the theology of Vatican II that continues to require clarification fifty years after the Council. The aim of this work is to elucidate "how, within the parameters of Catholic theology, it is possible for an atheist to be saved." While not intended as an apologetic response to the New Atheism, Bullivant is correct in observing that his work will challenge one item in the New Atheist arsenal, namely the assumption that individuals who happen to lack certain "religious information" are thereby automatically assumed to be damned. The primary focus of this study consists in elucidating two poignant sentences of Lumen Gentium 16: "Those also can attain to salvation who through no fault of their own do not know the Gospel of Christ or His Church, yet sincerely seek God and moved by grace strive by their deeds to do His will as it is known to them through the dictates of conscience. Nor does Divine Providence deny the helps necessary for salvation to those who, without blame on their part, have not yet arrived at an explicit knowledge of God and with His grace strive to live a good life."

Bullivant's post-mortem solution to the problem of how atheists might be saved is plausible and well-argued. In brief, Bullivant proposes that atheists can be saved in accordance with what they have done to Christ's "least ones." In a move all-too rarely made in contemporary theology, Bullivant offers hagiographical evidence to corroborate his claim. After a delightful analysis of how his paradigm is reflected in the lives of St. Benedict and St. Martin de Tours , the author dwells at greater length on the theology of Bl. Mother Teresa, who taught that Christ is present "in his distressing disguise" in the poor themselves. If this presence is as the saints describe it, then moral atheists not only act under the influence of grace but also have an objective encounter with Christ himself when performing corporal works of mercy for his "least ones." Echoing D'Costa, Bullivant thus argues that the atheist already in this life has an "ontological relationship" with Christ, whereas the requisite "epistemological relationship" with him will only be rectified post-mortem. None of this, he argues, requires that we attribute to the atheist implicit or anonymous faith; rather, in this case it is Christ who is anonymous. Briefly stated, "Anonymous Christs do not entail anonymous Christians."

For this reader, a significant remaining objection concerns how Bullivant seems to imply the presence of charity in an atheist while denying that this virtue is accompanied by at least implicit faith. It is difficult to see how the salvific grace an atheist receives in his encounter with Christ's "least ones" is not accompanied by some noetic content.
