CoCos hold a high promise of providing fully loss-absorbing equity capital when it is most needed and least available to financial institutions. Yet, having grown out of the 2007 2009 financial crisis, they are still an 'infant' reform instrument in many respects. Few of the instrument's design features (or even the rating, regulatory, and tax treatments) are entirely settled. This book seeks to move the discussion toward, and then past, the main decision points so that CoCos can prove their value for contingency planning and self-insurance all over the world. It is intended to increase the ability of issuers and investors to analyze and understand the different kinds of CoCos.

About the Author
Since entering the doctoral program at Princeton University as an International Finance Fellow, and inspired by Burt Malkiel and Ed Kane, George von Furstenberg has been fascinated with macro and micro aspects of finance. Throughout his career, work at US government agencies such as the President's Council of Economic Advisers (Senior Economist, 1973 76) and the Department of State (1989 90), at the IMF Research Department (Division Chief, 1978 83), and at the National Science Foundation (Rotating Program Director Economics, 2006 08) has alternated with his academic pursuits. A titled Professor of Economics at Indiana University, emeritus as of 2006, he is a member of the Toronto-based G8 Research Group, a past president (2000) of the North American Economics and Finance Association, and a participant in meetings of the Asian Economic Policy Panel. He has been listed in Who's Who in the World since 2006.

Work in his principal fields has been supplemented by continuing analyses of US economic and financial policies in several areas. These include regional trade agreements, housing and mortgage credit, and capital insurance for financial institutions as well as evaluations of US policy responses during the depth of the 2007 2009 financial crisis.

His current work on efficient design of Contingent Convertible Debt Securities (CoCos) and on Contingent Capital as a reform instrument to strengthen the private safety net through self-insurance of financial institutions has benefitted from visiting research fellowships in the Research Centre of the Deutsche Bundesbank (2010), the Hong Kong Institute for Monetary Research (2011), and the Risk Management Institute of the National University of Singapore (2011)

A pragmatic case for CoCos

Excellent book explaining why CoCos can be and should be a relevant financial instrument to alleviate deterioration in a bank’s balance sheet.

This book counter balances economic concepts which are oftentimes far removed from the reality of a bank’s operations and everyday decision-making experience. The pragmatic examples outlined in this book favorably contrast other books like The Bankers' New Clothes by Anat Admati & Martin Hellwig where the authors lay out very few foundations to support the “equity claim.”

Prof. Von Furstenberg central premise is that a simple measure -- banks voluntarily raising capital through CoCos and reshaping their capital structure -- issuing bonds that can be converted to equity -- would greatly improve the stability of the issuing bank, improve corporate governance, enhance market discipline in the banking system, and would greatly reduce bailout costs. Prof. Von Furstenberg slices through the various issues, catalogs and presents a credible and clear view of an instrument still in its infancy. As a result, he addresses a number of CoCos’ issues and features central to developing this product--policies or the lack thereof, tax treatment, rating agencies roles --risk premium, conversion price and replacement rate, recovery rate.

In this challenge, the discussion around going-concern recovery sets the tone for a serious conversation about the need for such product. The simplicity in which the various ratios and calculations are presented makes for a pragmatic and relevant case.
As a pragmatic example, I particularly enjoyed chapter 8 subsection 8.1 around the restructuring of SolarWorld and the theoretical demonstration of the need for such product not only for banks but for corporations. As an experienced restructuring banker, I appreciate the impact of the hypothetical CoCo issued and the estimated cash savings from interest payments, cash being key in such situations.

While no single measure proposal can resolve every problem that might arise in the financial sector, CoCos appear as a necessary threshold that must be addressed.

From a banker’s perspective (having consulted as well for 5 years on the European financial crisis), I found Prof. Von Furstenberg message to be quite persuasive and compelling.

A Valuable Book

For anyone who wants to understand contingent equity, this book is full of valuable insights, useful facts, and careful distinctions. It begins with an encyclopedic treatment of differences in the evolving levels and composition of capital (i.e., equity) requirements in the US and EU. Cocos are described as creative instruments that in Europe authorities have allowed to lower some of the tax and regulatory burdens associated with providing loss-absorbing private equity funding to banks when it is desperately needed.
The use of the word “potent” in his subtitle immediately tells us that Professor von Furstenberg hopes that his book can help overcome the reluctance of US tax and regulatory authorities to follow the Europeans’ lead. He builds a case for cocos as a way to temper the costs of Too-Big-to-Fail policies for taxpayers. In his view, the expected reduction in bailout costs would make it worthwhile to “bend” regulatory definitions of capital and tax-code restrictions on deductibility of interest, at least on instruments that are actuated automatically and set to convert long before the point of potential insolvency. In view of the difficulty of credibly estimating the side effects and after-effects of alternative policies, he does not attempt any quantitative balancing of the opportunity costs involved.
The book has immense value as a reference, which is how I will use it. It catalogues --and shows how to price-- a range of differences in contractual features and explains how particular variations in contract terms might improve corporate governance and enhance market discipline. It reviews real-world use and misuse of cocos at banks that have actually issued them. Finally, the last 90 pages of the book work through a series of major policy issues and offer well-chosen excerpts from key statements on cocos developed by the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision and US and European authorities.

Could have been a lot shorter.

The language, as usual from Gabriel GarcÍa Marquez, and even though a translation, is wonderful. This is a simple story with wonderfully complex characters, some (very few) of them are also sympathetic. But, in my opinion, this should have been classified as a "short" story, and most of the first half should have been eliminated as being irrelevant to the main story line. Perhaps this first half or so was necessary to "set the scene" but in my very humble opinion, this scene setting did not merit so many pages. I know many others have described this as a "classic", but on reading this, I felt like the little boy seeing the Emperor's new clothes as what they really are - nothing! And no, I didn't miss all the symbolism. I just didn't get anything new from it.

Ninety three days after being bitten by a rabid dog and still not showing any signs of rabies, twelve year old Sierva Maria de Todos los Angeles is put in a convent for observation. Sierva Maria has been put through a series of painful and uncomfortable remedies in order to try and fight the infection that might take her young life.

Her mother and father dislike each other immensely and have allowed the girl to be raised in the slave quarters near their home. This has led Sierva Maria to speak in an African tongue, adopt African traditions and not be close to either of her parents.
Bernarda Cabrera, Sierva Maria's mother, is addicted to sex, cacao and fermented honey. Bernarda slowly deteriorates due to her way of living. Her father, Don Ygnacio, lives a quiet life and although his daughter has been left to live with the slaves, he tries to amend this wrongdoing and bring her home.

Once inside the convent, thirty six year old Father Cayetano Delaura is assigned Sierva Maria's case and is put in charge of performing her exorcism. Delaura is a quiet intellectual and a lover of books.
He becomes smitten by the young girl and makes it his mission to prove that she is not possessed. By doing so he will improve her living conditions and save her from the grueling ordeal of an exorcism.

My Thoughts:
I have a love hate relationship with Marquez. He pisses me off but I can't seem to break up with him. This time around, he didn't make me too angry, he mostly mesmerized me with this beautifully written, yet strange tale.

Both love and demons play a part in this surreal story. I found Sierva Maria to behave as I'd expect a young spoiled girl abandoned by her parents would. Her behavior as a result of this poor parenting leads her to lie constantly and she even goes along pretending she is possessed.
Sierva Maria's beautiful red hair has been promised to the Virgin Mary, it must not be cut until the day she marries. When loose, it trails down to her feet.

I found Father Delaura's character to be passionate, this lover of books encloses himself in his room and read for hours every day.

Bernarda, Sierva Maria's mother was another character that had me shocked with her behavior and some truths that she reveals towards the end of the story.
Sierva's father, Don Ygnacio is a strange and complicated man. He seems not to care about his daughter, but then again he seems like he might love her after all.

Exorcisms and being possessed by demons was considered a legitimate danger during the setting of this book and Márquez brings this aspect of the story out divinely. He weaves in magic and realism perfectly and left me wondering what was real and what was imaginary.

I was both shocked and enthralled as I read this sad story about pain, heartache and faith. Highly recommended if you are a fan of Marquez or to those looking for a piece of fiction that will leave them a bit unsettled by its storyline yet mesmerized by its prose.
The final paragraph in Of Love and Other Demons gave me chills. I can't remember a book ever having that effect on me before.

"He had no room in his heart for anything but Sierva Maria, and even so it was not large enough to hold her. He was convinced that no oceans or mountains, no laws of earth or heaven, no powers of hell could keep them apart."

Another Modern Classic

I guess it goes without saying that Gabriel Garcia Marquez is a modern master and Of Love And Other Demons (1994) reflects this mastery. It reads like a classic, it is a story of love, faith, ignorance, and reflects the history of the new world in the shadow of Europe. As I read it, it felt as if it was a classic text passed down from generation to generation-it seems curious that such a novel could have been written in modern times. Marquez creates a time machine that takes us back to a time that was more focused on religion and heresy than science, but also creates a timeless love story in the process. Stylistically it is such a pleasure to make one's way through the prose. Another classic form a modern master.

The classic, definitive, world-famous Nonesuch Press edition of 1937, finally available again and bound in leather and linen. The text in these stunning volumes is taken from the 1867 Chapman and Hall edition, which became known as the Charles Dickens edition and was the last edition to be corrected by the author himself. The Nonesuch edition contains full-color illustrations selected by Dickens himself, by artists including Hablot Knight Browne ("Phiz"), George Cruikshank, John Leech, Robert Seymour, and George Cattermole.

The Nonesuch Dickens reproduces the original elegance of these beautiful editions. Books are printed on natural cream-shade high quality stock, quarter bound in bonded leather with cloth sides, include a ribbon marker, and feature special printed endpapers. Each volume is wrapped in a protective, clear acetate jacket.

The books are available as individual volumes, or as sets. The six-volume set contains Oliver Twist, Bleak House, Christmas Books, Nicholas Nickleby, David Copperfield, and Great Expectations together with Hard Times. Very moving stories and a great publishing house

Dickens' Christmas Books might be some of his most overlooked works, except for, of course, "A Christmas Carol." But in these stories he has captured the season's spirits of reflection and faith better than any other work I've read. "A Christmas Carol" is an acknowledged masterpiece; "The Chimes" and "The Battle of Life" are particularly moving as well. Four of these five stories bring me to tears by their ends.
I started in 1991 to read one story per year in the published sequence, (for Christmas 2000, I'm reading The Haunted Man again) and this has made December and its holidays more enjoyable and meaningful for me. I hope to continue the cycle and look forward to reading "this year's Christmas story" aloud to my family as my kids grow up.
Oxford Press/World's Classics publishes excellent quality paperbacks, and they do justice here to Dickens' powerful works. I highly recommend this work (and especially this publisher) to anyone; if you're looking for "A Christmas Carol", get this volume of all the Christmas Stories and enjoy even more of Dickens' masterful ability to weave the human condition into such moving short stories.

Review of the Nonesuch Dickens edition

My review here is not of the novel, but rather of the Nonesuch edition of Dickens' classic. The book itself is a facsimile edition of the 1937 Nonesuch Dickens, and is published by Barnes and Noble. The book itself is in quality hardback. "The Christmas Books" Nonesuch edition has the spine bound in leather and the rest of the cover is cloth-bound [the color is red].The dust jacket is clear quality plastic. The paper quality is of good stock and is cream in color.

The text is set in Martin's Type and the etchings were printed and hand-colored by A. Alexander and Sons Ltd. This is a beautiful and affordable classic [I own six of them and plan to get the rest] and the Nonesuch Dickens Classics will enhance any collector's library.

Full of joy and goodness

The first thing to point out with this collection is that it is well worth getting just for the first tale (the Christmas Carol). Christmas Carol, by far and away, more than matches the hype and is (dare I say it) genius! No other story (that I know of) imbues the spirit of christmas more perfectly and faithfully and this book is worth purchasing just for that.

However, tales two and three ('Chimes' and 'Cricket on the Hearth') are not quite so good and do let the collection down. 'Chimes' is a good story in essence: it is about a charactor called Trotty who becomes cynical about human nature and is taught a redemptive lesson by the spirits that live in the bells of the local church.
The really erksome thing is that the story never really seems to go anywhere and goes around the houses trying to do so. What should be a clear-cut and heartwarming tale, ends up not really imparting the lesson that it should; that man is built for better things.

'Cricket on the Hearth' is a little better and clearer in what it is aiming for and in its writing although I did read through ten pages of it where not a lot happened. Essentially it is about a carrier (Peerybingle) and his wife Dot who are watched over by a Guardian Angel in the form of a cricket. In a similar way to Christmas carol, this tale covers a redemption plot of the local toymaker (Tackleton) but also includes several other elements that make it an enjoyable Christmas tale.

So, to conclude, the first story in this book should be read by everyone, the second can be skipped and the third is worth reading, if only at Christmas time. As a collection, this book excludes the rather poorer tales of 'Battle of Life' and 'Haunted man', which is a redeeming virtue - if it excluded 'Chimes' as well, then it would be a true masterpiece.

Date palm, Phoenix dactylifera L. (Arecales: Arecaceae), is an important palm species cultivated since pre-historic times in the arid regions of the world and traditionally associated with the life and culture of the people in the Middle-East and North Africa which are the pre-dominant date palm growing regions worldwide. The crop is currently cultivated in nearly 30 countries in the Asian, African, American and Australasian continents. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN estimates that there are over 100 million date palms world wide with an annual production of over 7.5 million tonnes

Date palm is attacked by a wide range of insect pests mainly from the orders Coleoptera, Lepidoptera and Hemiptera besides phytophagous mites, several of which cause substantial loss in yield and even mortality of palms. During the last two decades there has been a significant increase in date palm cultivation worldwide especially in the Middle-East and North Africa where the area has increased over 50%, mostly in vast stretches of monoculture plantations offering a conducive macro and micro ha

bitat for existing and emerging insect pests of date palm. Global warming together with rapid large scale movement of palm species for farming and ornamental gardening has compounded the threat of insect pests to date palm. Indiscriminate use of insecticides to control these pests as the first line of defense is of major concern in the date growing countries due to the inherent disadvantages of insecticidal residues in dates (affecting exports), development of resistance to insecticides in the target species and resurgence of minor pest to major insect pest associated with chemical control

The book provides an overview on the biology (life cycle, damage, losses, geographical distribution, host range) and management (monitoring, action thresholds, biological control, chemical control, mechanical control, use of semiochemicals and biopesticides) of major arthropod pests of date palm from the orders Coleoptera (red palm weevil, long horn beetle, rhinoceros beetle, frond borer, sap beetles), Hemiptera (dubas bug, issid bug, scale insects, mealy bug) and Lepidoptera (lesser date moth, carob moth, raisin moth), and mites. About the Author

Warren Gay has been an electronics enthusiast since childhood and often dragged discarded TV sets home after school. In high school he learned to program the IBM-1130 and then pursued a career in software development at Ryerson Polytechnical, in Toronto. Since then he has worked professionally for over 30 years, mainly in C/C++, under Unix and Linux.

Meanwhile, the love of electronics has never faded since the early creation of his home-brewed Intel 8008 system in the 70's to the present day projects employing the Raspberry Pi. Warren also holds an advanced amateur radio license and was able to work the Mir space station (U2MIR) using packet radio in August 1991.

He's authored other books including Mastering Raspberry Pi for Apress,�Sams Teach Yourself Linux in 24 Hours, Linux Socket Programming by Example, and Advanced Unix Programming.

Hot off the press, hardware coding oriented, fast overview, worth having for RasPi C++

This is a preliminary review. Because the book was just published and had no purchaser reviews, when I got my copy this morning I thought I would make the effort to get this up. But you should know that I have not tested the accuracy of the information against actual code running on the RasPi hardware. Still, I thought it would be useful to give potential buyers some sense of the book, even if it is based only on a quick reading of the text. I will revise the review with any problems I find, and I may adjust the star rating up or down with time, but in the meantime, at least there will be something here besides the publisher's official spiel ; ) .

The first thing you need to know about this book is that it is in no way a substantial C++ primer. If you don't already know C++, you are going to have to use some other resource to learn it. There is more "primer" material on electronics hardware than on C++ (there is a little), and once you understand the role the book is attempting to fill, this isn't so bad. Besides, I suspect the author figures programmers need more help with hardware than with coding.

There was one topic in the book I found a little off topic, and that was the section on PiSpy. It wasn't a negative, I just didn't see it as all that relevant to C++ and the RasPi. Perhaps in time I will see the connection, but so far it seems a little tangential.

The book gives you a good deal of the information you will need in order to use C++ and the Raspberry Pi together, including an overview of key RasPi hardware oriented C++ classes. The first half of this book is an orientation for the hardware, the second half is more software oriented, with the assumption that C++ on the Pi is going to be largely about talking to the hardware. Again, if you want to know about C++ application development in the sense of working with data, networking protocols, guis, and so on, you are going to want some additional resources to draw on. If you want to know about coding to manage things like switch bounce, then you will be good to go.

I recognize that the book is something of a survey/intro text, and is slightly less than 200 pages, but I would have liked to see more depth, more sample code, and more examples. I'm not saying that these things aren't there, but if this is your first stab at this kind of development, you'll want to put on a big pot of coffee before you start. If you have basic knowledge of C++, and if you have some knowledge of hardware and embedded development then this publication should allow you to get a quick toehold and start you on your way. But it is the beginning of your journey, not the middle or the end.

In conclusion, if you want to code for the RasPi with C++, you should probably have this book. At the moment the book doesn't have a lot of competition, and it certainly contains worthwhile information. Sadly, the price reflects its niche position.
