Great guide

Great information on how to read satellite images. Will greatly help in Meteorology studies whether you're a student or a more advanced hobbyist. It is best to have an introduction into meteorology such as "Meteorology Today" before reading this book. It will help in your understanding of the text.

An intensive exploration of satellite image-based weather analysis.

There are not a lot of textbooks that cover satellite-image based weather identification and forecasting, and luckily, Conway's book is still available. He starts out covering ca. 1990s satellite image technology and moves on to sat-based geography before diving deeply into sat image interpretation for weather forecasters and enthusiasts. Conway's approach is outstanding, simultaneously providing the reader with the weather theory that is manifest in the sat images. I run a NOAA APT satellite downlink system at home (receiving signals from the NOAA polar orbiters on 137MHz and processing the telemetry w/software) so I put what I learn from Conway to work every day. Overall, it's a fascinating, well written book. I hope that this book gets an update someday, so as to take advantage of the advances in weather satellite imagery in the last 15 years since it was printed.

RAJIV JAITLY is the managing partner at Jaitly LLP, a risk consultancy that provides independent risk, fund governance and operational due diligence services to global alternative investment clients. He set up and managed due diligence and investment management operations for the alternative investment asset businesses of major companies such as UBS, Santander and AXA. Jaitly has also advised the Regulatory Policy team of the U.K. Pensions Regulator, was appointed an expert by the UK Office of Fair Trading for its market study into the UK defined contributions pensions market and was commissioned by the UK Financial Services Consumer Panel to write a report on Fund Costs and their implications. He has also held appointments as a non-executive director of funds.

Great for advanced stuents :D

I love this book. It's easy to use as a self-study guide if you are an advanced student of Japanese. The lessons are clearly set up with vocabulary words and example sentences - and then each successive chapter the vocabulary builds on itself. In lesson one when you learn the 15 or so kanji, by lesson two they already throw lesson one's kanji into the example sentences for the kanji you're learning in lesson two, and so on. It's very very good. But, again, don't overestimate yourself. This book is neither for the lazy student nor for the so-called "high-intermediate". There are other books that can help those types of people so don't waste your money on this if it's not going to benefit you! :)

it is comrpised of 50 lesson units. In my opinion, it is not designed for elementary learners. it is far from that. Every unit contains new japanese words and compound words and then their equivalents in English supplied with example sentences for every new kanji. And you find reading exercises only in Japanese and it rest with your level of Japanese proficiency to translate them into English. No key for translations whatsoever. However this bokok deserves 5 stars and I recommend it for at least intermediate learners.

Learn to read Japanese newspapers

NOTE: This book has the exact same content as the earlier published Business Kanji: Over 1,700 Essential Business Terms in Japanese, only the title differs. Keep this in mind when looking for a used copy.

THE PURPOSE
This book will not teach you keigo or business conversation or how to communicate in a Japanese business environment. Rather than for learning "Business Japanese", as the title states, this book has apparently been written with the specific goal of helping the student to acquire the ability to read financial newspapers (i.e. Nihon Keizai Sinbun 日本経済新聞）and financial articles of newspapers in general in mind.

That being said, this book is not only useful for understanding financial newspapers and other related literature but also anything business related literature and will also make reading any general Japanese newspapers a lot less taunting task. And although the material is from the mid '90s the language (not the business/financial information) is hardly dated.

THE LEVEL
This book is for anyone in a broad scale from just having completed a beginner's course (e.g. Genki I & II) up to (lower) advanced level. Even if you are fluent in Japanese you might find learning some financial terms and newspaper-specific vocabulary helpful in case you don't have a background in finance, although the book might not be ideal at the advanced level.

The book excepts the reader to have the knowledge of 130 kanji and about one to four words per kanji, which are listed in the beginning of the book (you can view this list on the amazon preview of this book) and grammar that appears in the example sentences throughout. So you will also need a grammar guide (for those not on the advanced level) and a Japanese and kanji dictionaries.

USING THE BOOK
As for using this book in individual study, the book is divided in 50 "steps", each with a list of new words, readings of the words and practice sentences, translations of the words and additional practice. The layout is quite effective with integrated review (the keywords learned in each lesson are repeated in the example and practice sentences and readings in later steps, minimizing the need for "cramming").

Having read through and understood the meanings of the vocabulary and the sentences it is up to the student to read and re-read the practice sentenced of each lesson for fluency.

THE CONTENTS
The book is divided in two parts. The first part is divided in two sections and 50 steps. Part one is titled 語彙と読む練習 (Vocabulary and Reading Practice). The first section is titled 最重要語彙 (Most Frequently Used Vocabulary) and includes the first 20 steps. Having read just these 20 steps the student should be capable of understanding quite a bit of the Nihon Keizai Sinbun (Nikkei) newspaper. Section two is 重要語彙 (Frequently Used Vocabulary) and uses actual selections from Nikkei as the practice sentences.

Part two is titled 総漢字表 (Kanji Introduced in Part I and Additional Kanji). Kanji vocabulary listed by the 部首 (radical). For example ("..." implies abbreviation on my behalf, キソ means the kanji is introduced in the basic vocabulary section in the beginning of the book, st12 on step 12 etc., no markings means not introduced in the book, although might have come up in the sentences):

"This supplement includes 174 kanji which are important and frequently used, following the kanji introduced in the main text of Part I and Part II of this textbook. With this supplement, this book covers more than 90 percent of all the kanji that appear in the newspaper articles written on finance and economics."

CLOSING THOUGHTS
To get most out of this book the student should ideally live in Japan or have other means to get their hands on Nikkei newspaper on regular basis. (As the practice sections are short, without access to Japanese newspapers the course is somewhat more difficult as it would otherwise be due to the practice sections being quite concise.) The student would familiarise themselves with the newspaper by scanning for any vocabulary they already know and trying to extract information from the newspaper while studying the first 20 lessons. From lesson 21 onwards the student should be getting more and more comfortable with reading the newspaper, until by lesson 50 the student should be able to progress to actually reading the newspaper with aid of the kanji/vocabulary lists in Part II.

The book is full of great photos which comprised %50 of the book. Nice illustrations, simple language to go through. The author presents the treatment steps thoroughly with photographs and illustrations . several cases are presented nicely. The price could have been less ..

Very well explained with a lot of pictures and really easy to understand explanations.
What i like is that book itself is mostly clinically oriented with emphasis on clinical cases that i meet in my everyday practice.
Highly recommend this book to everybody who wants to upgrade in esthetic dentistry.
