"We can do better, but expectation alone is not enough. We need answers and examples like the ones Gianna and Brook provide with great insight from research and practice and great compassion for teachers and students. My hope is that this book will become a touchstone for all of us."
-Carmen Farina, Chancellor of New York City Schools

"Positive, supportive relationships with children help them develop socially and emotionally and help you to effectively manage your classroom," writes Gianna Cassetta. She shows you an approach to creating that environment that can actually be planned for, taught, and supported from the first day of school-or anytime you want to reset your classroom community.

Gianna has been a teacher and leader, and the classroom management strategy she shares in Classroom Management Matters shifts you away from professionally draining rewards-and-consequences systems that threaten children rather than connect with them. Instead of tips and techniques Gianna presents a plan for explicitly teaching children how to be effective learners and accountable members of the classroom. You'll quickly learn to:

  • know your students better and understand the causes of individuals' misbehavior
  • assess children's development along a provided social-emotional continuum-just like any other skill you teach
  • teach these self-management skills to support a positive classroom and academic growth
  • set and maintain boundaries with students
  • respond to disruption with effective teaching language.

With reflection questions, classroom examples, and summaries of supporting studies from researcher Brook Sawyer, Classroom Management Matters helps you be a learning leader in the classroom instead of an authority. "I'll show you detailed strategies that prevent and minimize your difficulties with students," writes Gianna, "so you can focus on constructive action that will have a lasting, positive impact."

and this is one of the best I’ve encountered
By MargaretW
As a teacher of students and teachers for over 22 years, I’ve read a lot of books about classroom management, and this is one of the best I’ve encountered. It is an incredibly powerful book that tells the hard truth – that there are no shortcuts, gimmicks, or magic wands for effectively managing a classroom full of children – but then goes on to provide readers with the next best thing -- practical and effective strategies that will work with all students.

One of my favorite chapters is chapter 3 in which the authors set out in concise terms how to set limits with children and effectively teach expectations. The chapter provides a clear roadmap for how to do both and then ends with concrete tips for how to maintain emotional objectivity, even when students misbehave. Given that one of the number one downfalls teachers face with classroom management is taking students’ behavior personally, the section on emotional objectivity alone makes the book worthwhile.

But, that section is just one of many similar jewels. The book is rich with unique insights, helpful tables and graphics, and an easy-to-read style. Perhaps most incredibly, the authors manage to challenge teachers to question the way they’ve always done things but do so in a way that makes them feel that change and growth are possible and within their grasp.

Great resource for new teachers!
By Stefanie Gurule
Having taught in alternative education most of my career and spent many hours coaching teachers as a principal, I found this book to be a great resource. I found chapter three, "How do I set boundaries and teach expectations?" particularly helpful with mentoring new teachers. I would recommend this book to any new teacher or principal looking for great resources to share.

Helpful and practical guide for anyone who works with youth in group settings
By Yoli
I was so excited to find this book; it is incredibly timely, relevant and useful. It provides practical tools for preventing misbehavior and supporting all students, regardless of their background, in their development of new social and emotional skills. As a university professor, I regularly work with teachers and school-based mental health professionals who feel unprepared to respond to rule-breaking behavior their classrooms, or in therapy groups, effectively. I'm thrilled finally have a applicable and accessible text that is grounded in cutting edge research that I can recommend to all adults who work with youth in group settings, from the classroom to the clinic! I strongly encourage teachers, youth workers, mental health professionals, and others to buy this book and share it with their colleagues.
