A rare read on a little known subject

I was very impressed with this book. Having lived in Ethiopia I have had the pleasure of studying their history from their perspective. Ethiopian history from other perspectives is often skewed by a religious bias, as in the case of rastafarians. Rastas will often paint a portrait of Haile Selassie as some kind of perfect man who was unjustly ousted or some kind of God king. The simple fact is, he was neither, he was a politician that in many respects was opposite the image he carefully crafted for the public. This book clearly speaks to his corrupt dealings, but does not spend a tremendous amount of time on him because the subject of the book is the terror caused by the Derg.
Shifaw also does not hold bias towards Mengistu, and in most cases against. He clearly demonstrates the facts of this tragic historical event, and they really need not interpretation as these atrocities speak for themselves. This really is a wonderfully written book about a tragic time in Ethiopian history and there are not many books like this written on this subject.
