Essential Reference of Spanish-Colonial Coin Collectors

If you are interested in Spanish-Colonial coins and cobs, this book is essential. The book was published in 2002, which means prices are not current. However, it's the detailed descriptions, photos, and history of the coins that makes it so valuable. Even Krauses most recent coin books don't have current prices. And unlike Krauses other guides, this one covers all dates for all coins, up until approximately the date each country gained it's independence from Spain.

No Philippine coins

Contrary to what is stated in the editorial review, this catalog does not include Philippine coins during the spanish colonial period. In fairness to the authors it is stated in the foreword that this catalog deals with Ibero-American coinage. Aside from that omission, this book is worth buying in the sense that if all you collect is Spanish/Portugese Colonial Coins you won't have to buy the Other Standard Catalogs that are divided into centuries as this catalog spans the entire timeline.

Needs an update, improved photography and a new printer

647 pages of dated information. The book is formatted much like the Red Book. Published in 2002, it's pricing would be as valuable as a 2002 Red Book, i.e. not very useful in a 2013/14 market. The quality of print is significantly substandard and many of the photographs are of poor quality. This may be due to limited availability of high quality photographs, but is an area that needs work. I am a neophyte researcher in this arena, but it does appear that a significant amount of the information is inaccurate, particular mintage numbers. If Krause could update the book to reflect the current market, improve the photography and find a decent printer the tome would be of much greater value.

RJ Bond and company puts to rest of what happens to Tupac! Must read vs the tired old theories of Greg Kading and Murder Rap.

Recently Greg Kading released a documentary with the same name as his book "Murder Rap". His entire theory rested upon the idea that Tupac was murdered by people hired by Puffy Combs and that money wasn't an issue for Tupac and Death Row. However, Kading himself admitted that his theories wouldn't hold up in a court of law. However, in this book many documents that held up in a court of law (including cases where Tupac's mom Affeni Shakur was able to sue Death Row and get Pac's music) are presented:

Sometimes a fate worse than death is embarrassment. And we all know that happens to the messenger 8 out of 10 times.

So what was the exposure, exactly? What fights off a big "so what" when Shakur elects to "divorce" Death Row and Interscope?

We go back to Shakur's sloppy, handwritten contract. A contract can be declared void, otherwise known as a contract "rescission." You have to give everything back to their rightful owners, spent or not. So what might this have meant to Shakur, Death Row, and Interscope, once Shakur was onto the diversion of his money?

From just the examples, and that is not a full accounting to be sure, of the fraudulent conveyance shown in the later court filings, at least three hundred fifty thousand ($350,000) dollars was converted, misappropriated, or whatever term fits best, from Shakur. It looks pretty provable and documented.

Let's suppose that because of the fraud that has apparently occured, the contract to Shakur was rescinded. Then, let's also suppose that Death Row and Interscope have sold 10 million units of Shakur's albums. We'll offset any reduction with the fact that Shakur was on "Above the Rim," "GridLock'd," and a few other "one-offs" that made Death Row some major money, not forgetting "Greatest Hits." That number sounds good.

Next remember that Shakur came around at the down of the "digital" era before MP3's. Consumers were still paying $14-$20 bucks each for a CD, especially a double album; a concept lost on most young adults 18-25. Now how old do you feel?

We'll also knock off marketing and manufacture costs, say 25%. That leaves us hovering at anywhere between one hundred twenty million dollars ($120,000,000) and one hundred sixty million dollars ($160,000,000) give or take a few million. All that money would need to be returned to Shakur, "To Make Parties Whole", the term used in Court.

But let's not stop there.

While Interscope and Death Row have to reach into their pockets for the money, the Court would then factor the "fraud" used to obtain the contract, the conveyance afterward and the inability for Shakur to have use of those funds. The general formula is provable damages. Some might argue that the exposure would be equitable with what Death Row and Interscope made and used in the interim, so we'll stack another 120-160 million on top.

That leaves exposure to Death Row and Interscope at about two hundred forty million dollars ($240,000,000).

And because its fraud, let's talk about punitive damages. To find a reference for possible punitive damages, let's look at the "one that got away"; Harris v. Death Row. Michael Harris and his wife, who allegedly formed Death Row with Kenner and Knight received a rather large judgement against Death Row, which put the label under: $45,000,000 in economic or real damages, $2,000,000 in "non-economic damages" (pain and suffering) and an incredible $60,000,000 in punitive damages.

So if Harris's got roughly 1.25 times the economic damages as a punitive award, apply that same formula to Shakur.

Three hundred million dollars ($300,000,000) in punitive damages plus 240 million in actual damages or $540,000,000 were on the line? $107 million had knocked out Death Row. Think about who is up line from there?

One more thing: a 1996 judgment for $540,000,000.00 is worth about $804,930,401.53 now.

Former Goldman Sachs investment banker Talbott (Obamanomics) delivers a tightly written analysis of the financial crisis that while sufficiently credible and engaging, adds little to the conversation. Talbott launches a tirade against prevalent myths conveniently categorized as Stock Investing Lies, Lies About the Global Economy, etc. He summarily attacks the U.S. government, lobbyists, the media, Alan Greenspan and Henry Paulson, and pronounces the entire global banking system insolvent. Despite some bravado behind these sweeping claims, many of his assertions are convincing—the roots of the collapse of our economy are a lack of regulation, conflicts of interest between business and government and a preponderance of lying and cheating. Offers up the alternative view to "conventional wisdom"...

I love books that take conventional wisdom, the things "everyone knows to be true", and puts them under the microscope for renewed examination. John R. Talbott does this to Wall Street and investing in his book The 86 Biggest Lies on Wall Street. You may not agree with all of his conclusions, and a number of them might make you financially uncomfortable. But in any case, it's worth having your assumptions challenged to see if there might be a better path out there.

The format here is pretty simple. You have "Lie #nn: " followed by the statement that tends to be spouted as a truth that everyone accepts. And then Talbott proceeds to smash it based on his observations and experience from a lifetime of working in Wall Street. Given his track record in calling the mortgage crisis and banking crisis, he does bear some attention. For instance, he starts out with a heavy hitter, and that is that the American economy was the strongest and most resilient in the world heading into the current crisis. When he digs below the stats usually cited to "prove" this, you see why he disagrees. He sees GDP growing due to population growth, not due to a strengthening economy. There's also the matter of illegal aliens hiding the true growth of the population. Borrowing has driven the increased consumption, which means that in addition to "growth" you have debt. Total debt outstanding in the US has gone from $25 trillion to $60 trillion in the last 10 years, and he doesn't even bring in the unfunded liabilities of Social Security and Medicare. Family income has also increased due to spouses joining the workforce, as opposed to real income per individual worker increasing. When you add all this up along with other observations he has, you realize that this economy was far from healthy and robust.

Talbott also has harsh words for the Troubled Asset Relief Program that Hank Paulson deemed critical to getting the markets unfrozen. In fact, lie #17 is "everything that Hank Paulson ever said about the Troubled Asset Relief Program". Can't get much more inclusive than that. He shows how the initial target of the plan was immediately dropped after the legislation was passed, and money was instead given to banks who were in good standing with Paulson. Talbott also shows how, if banks had really sold their bad properties to TARP, there would have been even worse financial ramifications, as it would then be possible to value the bad debt and banks would be forced to revalue their balance sheets (for the worst), leading to even more solvency issues due to being over-leveraged.

I felt the part that I struggled with most was on stock investing, as we've been told certain things for so long. Talbott takes on the low P/E recommendation, companies that should be able to weather any crisis, and how EBITDA is more reliable than net income in assessing a company's earning potential. He does have alternative recommendations for all of these situations that are worth considering. You may not agree, and you'll certainly get pushback from the industry "experts", but given how things have gone of late, their expertise may not be all it's been cracked up to be...

86 Lies is recommended reading if for nothing else to get an alternative view of how the economy is really functioning. You can then choose to agree or ignore, but at least you'll do so with a more complete picture of reality.

Much more than a populist diatribe

The title of this book might imply that it's a populist diatribe, but the book is so much more than that. John Talbott manages to provide very clear, concise, and (most importantly) logical explanations for the roots of the current financial crisis, along with his strong opinions about how it might have been handled, and what's in store for the future. Along the way, he does manage to dispel a number of popular myths about this recession.

Interestingly, the book is about as totally non-partisan as a book on the politics of economics could possibly be. He simultaneously lambastes the corporate world for it's greed, excesses, and short-sightedness, while at the same time strongly criticizing Obama's strategy for ending the economic malaise. He couches his explanations in terms other than liberal vs. conservative, or Republican vs. Democrat.

For people who would like to understand the roots of our current situation, and listen to some practical suggestions and (sadly, rather dour) prognostications on the future, this book is an excellent investment.

Very well written book, concise and to the point. I've learned quite a lot from reading it. Some author's beliefs I can't agree with but overall the picture he depicts is unfortunately very true.

My only criticism is author's premise that markets are efficient which leads him to conclude, for instance, that Harvard likely trades partially on inside info. While this certainly could be true, my research indicates that one can beat the market using short-term approach (granted it's not easy) and Harvard's trading team returns are certainly reasonable. In this day and age holding a belief that markets are efficient or they are a random walk is a clear bias people hold on to for psychological reasons since computer simulations can demonstrate that neither is true.

One thing I would add to the gloom and doom picture is often neglected aspect of environment. On top of all other purely economics problems, we also face an unprecedented environmental threat which can't be considered as entirely unrelated problem. For instance, we could soon reach a point when not regulating companies is not an option due to environmental hazard they create, but imposing regulations on them would push these companies into bankruptcy.

As for politics, I 100% agree that current model is unsustainable. In my view, it's ridiculous that we elect people based on how well they campaign. As a result, we have politicians making worst economic decisions possible.
